We're towing a 32.5 foot travel trailer with an F250 and would like to visit the Cody Firearms Museum on our way to Sheridan, WY from West Yellowstone. It looks like we'd need to take US-14 E/US-16 E/US-20 E. Is this route OK for the rig or is there a better option? Are there any "gotchas" we need to be aware of?

Morning Hunter,

The The Buffalo Bill Center of the West is a huge museum. Ya can't get much in a 1/2 hour. Therefore I think you should plan on making this a two day trip.

I would leave West Yellowstone really early to get to Cody as early in the day as possible. Plan on a minimum 4 hours at the museum. Six hours would be better! Then stay the night in a RV park in Cody before completing the rest of your journey. See this MAP.

If your family would enjoy swimming in a hot spring pool you might consider leaving Cody after you finish with the museum and driving to Thermopolis and visiting Star Plunge. Then your route would look more like this MAP.

You might be tempted to go via US14. Most who have done that in an RV don't recommend it. I personally haven't taken that route so I have no opinion on it.

If you choose to spend the night along the way be sure to make reservations.

We did that same route coming from the east in 2017. Nice easy drive but we encountered ice at peak on US-16. Just take it slow. We only stopped for dinner in Cody…looks like a nice town to visit!
Like it so much out there, we are heading that direction July 1.

Coming from Cody, US 16 is the easiest route, US 14 more difficult, and US 14A the most difficult. The problem with US 14/14A for tow vehicles without an exhaust brake is the downgrade into Ranchester--steep, winding, sharp curves, lots of guard rails--a real brake killer. But not really a problem for RVs with exhaust brakes.

Incidently, the USFS Sibley Lake campground on US 14-14A is gorgeous. Plus it is one of the rare Forest Service cgs with 30A electric hookups. Water, but no dump.

We were wondering about this same route, only in reverse. We are coming from Gillette, WY, and traveling to Saint Anthony with a 43 ft DP with a Jeep toad. We want to take the scenic route as we have two days to make the trip. The information posted by “Yeloduster” is great! We were considering taking US 14, but will likely opt for US 16 instead.
