Do the southern route first. May is the time to be north and even sometimes it's too early. Or... go north first with the stipulation that SHE chip the ice off the windshield and shovel out a parking space.

I would do the southern route first. Why take chances with the possibility of snow or just cold weather. What is her rational for wanting to go north first?

OK Thanks for all of your passionate replies. After careful consideration I am going to do the manly thing. I will look my DW in the eye and with the utmost sincerity tell her the northern route is closed until May 1st at the earliest. I should be able to get away with this since she does not read this forum. However, if I look like this :facepalm you'll know she found out about my post.

The southern route first, but sage advice on being happy. Also Goggle US weather map. It will show you average high/Low temperature of your route by month.

I would do the southern leg first not just to avoid the cold in the North but to beat some of the heat in the South.

As a woman, I'm going to assume that a lot of this sage advice is tongue-in-cheek. If it's not, then I guess I'm not a typical wife.

I'd be on your side for taking the southern route going and the northern coming back. Makes much more sense weather-wise.

If she should find out about your post and May 1st ruse, mention that the only two wives who read your post (as of today) sided with you.

You can be right or you can be correct. Correct is better. If you cannot use proper logic to convince her, hopefully reality will aid in future lessons.

seasonal parks

Most parks in the North do not open until mid May. You would be wiser to do the southern route first.

You can check your camping books or online to find out if the parks you choose will be open.
