Yellowstone Route, need new one

I’m staying in Livingston, Montana in a few weeks.
I was going to take 89 down to West Yellowstone but, it’s closed and will not be open this summer.
So I am thinking about going back up to I 90 to 287 and head to West Yellowstone, it adds time and miles. Also. I can get diesel in Ennis, Montana too.
I want a full tank whne I get to Yellowstone. You never know about power outages.
I don’t think I want to take 191 south with a 43 ft diesel pulling a Jeep.

Any other opinions?

From the sounds of the news the park may not open for a while. Would seriously consider changing plans and visiting another area. Too many businesses and roads will be closed if the news is correct. Maybe Black Hills area of South Dakota.

Been to the Black Hills 2 yrs ago, spent 2 weeks there.
I’m going to West Yellowstone.
Thank you for the advice

We went to West Yellowstone last year. We came down 191. Ventana 4037 towing a Jeep Wrangler. Lots of turnouts to let traffic by. We just kept at a comfortable speed. Limit is 55 and 60. We kept it to 45-50 for the most part. Scenic drive. Lots of semi’s use this route too.

update on Yellowstone

I work in Yellowstone. 89 from Livingston to Gardiner is now open with no restrictions but.... once you get to Gardiner the entrance to the park is closed so there is no way in. We are using an old stage coach road for admin traffic but nothing else. The west gate at West Yellowstone, E gate from Cody and the S gate from the Tetons will be open starting Monday or Tuesday. It will be by reservation only, details to follow.Things are progressing faster than anticipated and in a week or ten days much more will be known about which other roads can be repaired

What about the campgrounds and lodges in Yellowstone?
Are they going to reopen?

I also need to travel thru YS to get west from Cody and later into the Tetons. Please post asap if anything is available for reserving an entry pass. Thanks!

191 is just fine with any size RV. No mountains!

Livingston was hit, also, so check on your reservation and any issues.

The best place for up-to-date information on Yellowstone's openings is to go directly to the national park's web site.

Here is Grand Teton's web site:

I thought the NPS site too but it hasn't been updated since 6/14 and kmx gave very good info. Gives me hope on the rest of my trip.

QUESTION: And I know this will be speculation on your part.
Do you think that by August 15th, the route from West Yellowstone, down the Grand Loop Rd, by Old Faithful, then down & across the Tetons, to Moran will be drivable with a 38' coach & tow vehicle? It is to be my route going back East & South, to eventually get to Amarillo (I-40 East)!
Your help is appreciated, as is your "update" post!
THANKS!!

My guess … yes, that route will likely be opened, maybe as early as next week. Keep in mind there’s a sizable road construction project this summer between Old Faithful and West Thumb, which is part of the route. Not sure how that project will be impacted given the recent developments. Happy travels, stay safe.

According to the NPS web site the southern half will be open next week.
