Yellowstone to Cody

Talked with someone who had been through Yellowstone recently. Apparently the east entrance (closest way to Cody) is a mess with construction this summer. Will be in Yellowstone in about 3 weeks.

Usually I take the east exit on US 20 direct to Cody.

What about going out the NE entrance thru Cooke City, MT and then hwy 212 to hwy 296 down to Cody. It looks like there are some 8,000 foot passes, but doable?

Driving a 2003 Monaco Safari Trek (29 feet).

We went through four different times a few weeks ago and yes, there's construction around fishing bridge, but it wasn't an issue. It was just a few miles of gravel road, even in the rain it didn't pose any issues.

If you really want to drive an extra 70 miles to avoid a couple miles of gravel then it's doable. It's a nice and scenic drive for sure, just adds one steep climb up Dead Indian, but nothing that would make it treacherous or impassable.

Here's a good description on the roads in and out of Yellowstone including the NE one:

We have done the Ys to Cody out Sylvan Pass and east gate during construction several years ago. A lot of traffic, but the construction crew handled the job with very little delay. It was slower than we wanted but beat the heck out of the alternate route you mention. BTW, it is a beautiful drive.
