2017 F250 5th wheel hitch question
I have on order a 2017 F-250 Ford Lariat with the factory 5th wheel "puck" system installed. I am towing a Grand Deisgn/Solitude 300gk. My current truck is a 2011 F-250. The ground to top of rail measure on the 2017 is 3" higher than the 2011. The 2017 rail is 1 inch higher. My concern is that with the overall height and rail height of the 2017 being 3" higher than the 2011, I will have a situation where the trailer will be nose high and the trailer may strike the rail. I am using a Pullrite 4400 automatic slider. Pullrite tells me that the adaptor for the 2017 will cause the hitch to be another 4-5" higher. So, overall I could be 7-8" higher hitch height.
Looks to me like my best solution is to find a shorter hitch.
Anyone have experience with the 2017 F-250 and 5th wheel hitches that can help?

I have the B&W turnover ball gooseneck and companion hitch in my high bed Dodge 4x4...
I moved the hitch on the pin box on the 5th wheel trailer... to a different location and than lowered the adjustment on the companion hitch.. and still really didn't get the trailer level... so I took the 2 legs of the companion hitch and trimmed it down almost 2" and than lowered the brackets on the companion hitch lower into the bed...
The above works for me.. and gives me the space I need... I think the people at B&W make the companion hitch for the puck system... and from the pictures it looks like it can be modified and adjusted to handle your needs....
good luck..

Our TV is a 2016 with the puck system.....nice system.
When I found out that the Pullrite puck adapter added 3-4" to the height we no longer considered it..... the Demco autoslide is lower.
In the end we didn't go with either because 10-15 degree limit on connecting the trailer. We went with a Reese Sidewinder.
To get started I bought the Ford ($300) puck adapter and a cheap ($150) hitch off Craigslist that fit the adapter.
Later I bought the BD3 ($$$) that drops down through the adapter so that it is only 1" higher with the puck adapter vs. without it.
To level the trailer we have the bunk of the trailer 5" (a little low) above the box rails. When we arrive at the campsite we sometimes add air to the BD3 so the trailer is 7"-8" over the rails.

Thanks for the insights. I've done some research and it looks to me like the Demco 8550044 will be what I need. It fits directly into the Ford puck system without an adapter and has an height adjustment from a low of 15.5" to a high of 18.25".

Hi,
With that much pin weight you should really consider changing your order to a F350.
Just sayin...
Good Luck

Pin Weight
Thanks for the insight. But unless I'm missing something, the Payload capacity of the 2017 F250 is 3350 and the pin weight of the Solitude 300gk is 2700. Looks to me like I'm ok. Am I looking at the wrong numbers?

Sorry, I was thinking the diesel crew cab models which range are about 7500 lbs UVW. That leaves only 2500 for passengers, hitch and pin weight.

Look over on the Grand Design owner's forum and you will find that your loaded pin weight will be north of 3K lbs. Not much left for hitch, people, etc.

I have an F350 and use this hitch that weighs 32lbs. My pin weight is right around 3k on a 38 ft Raptor toyhauler.

When you get the combination weighted you will find out two things. Most likely the truck will be heavier than you expect, reducing the pin weight you can have. You will also find out the camper pin weight is a lot more than you think. If it is not too late, you will be happier with the F350.
Great choice on the camper though.

I too use the Andersen. Another good choice would be the Reese Goosebox. Do check with the trailer/frame manufacturer to be certain the Goosebox is approved.
You didn't mention short or long bed.

Thanks for the insights. I've not considered converting to a gooseneck. One important question...The 2017 Heavy Duty Trucks are about 3 " taller than the pre 2017's and the rail is 1 inch taller. I am concerned that my trailer will set nose high in the truck thereby being not level going down the road. My RV dealer suggested "fiipping the axel" to make the trailer about 2-3 higher. I'd rather not do that. Did you have an issue with the 2017 being taller. Does the trailer set level and still give you adequate rail clearance?

The Reese product I was referring to is not a gooseneck conversion but rather a pinbox replacement called a "goosebox".
The short bed always comes with limitations. The Andersen hitch provides for 9" of offset (moving the kingpin away from the cab) This will provide for (likely) enough cab clearence but might put the back of the pinbox into the side rails or tailgate during certain maneuvers.
Lots of things to consider and you are entering un-charted waters when setting up a first year truck. It would be nice to confer with others already using the truck you have ordered...
Good luck!
