I have a 15,000 lb 5'er with all my stuff in it. I bought it with Goodyear G614 16" G rated tires. They are rated to carry the 15,000 lbs. In the past year I have had two blowouts both the front tires, one on each side. There is about 22,000 miles on these tires and they are four years old. My trailer is level when towing. I have faithfully kept them inflated to the max of 110 PSI. The tire guy told me, after inspection of the last blown tire, that it blew due to overloading. I am upgrading to 17.5" J rated tires. These four tires will carry a max of 19,000 lbs. @ 125 PSI. The new tires are aproximately the same diameter as the G614 tires. The new ones are Michelins and of course I must buy 5 and 5 rims to go with the new size tires. Michelin is the only brand that I know of that makes J rated tires in this size. There are none made in 16" J rated.
Here I sit in Gillette, WY waiting for my new tires. As a full timer I am very flexible. I should be on the road by Fri. The cost is aprox. $2800.00. I was going to upgrade in the future but the future came sooner than I expected. Oh Well !!!

I feel you pain. We recently suffered our fifth tread separation with Goodyear (GY) G614 tires. The last one over $7500.00 in damages and we were displaced out of our 5er for two week in a Hotel room waiting on repairs to be completed. Good news is GY did paid for all damages.

I Like you did my research and decided to upgrade to 17.5 rims and tires. I ordered my rims and tires from trailertireandwheels.com I purchased the Series 03 aluminum wheel and Goodyear G 114 LHT 215/75R17.5 LRH tires. I went with GY G114 as they are speed rated at 75 mph and GY has always stood behind their tires and always paid all claims I have filed regarding damages. I did not purchase a spare 17.5 tire and rim spare I kept spare G614. I also had 2 failures of the Goodyear G614 RST tires in 2007 within 3 months of each other. The first failure did little damage, but the second resulted in $2,500 in damages to the 5th wheel, which Goodyear paid to repair and also replaced all 4 tires.

This year, with the Goodyear G614 tires approaching 3 years of age once again, I bit the bullet and also bought 5 each 17.5" aluminum wheels with 215/75 Michelin XTA tires mounted and balanced from Scott at www.trailertiresandwheels.com . My choice of the Michelins was based on trouble-free experience with Michelin XPS Ribs on a previous 5th wheel and the fact that I've had no failures with Michelins and 4 with Goodyears. I elected to replace the spare with a 17.5" Michelin XTA since the spare was one of the original Goodyear G614 RST tires and was approaching 7 years of age. I'm quite satisfied with the new tires and wheels so far and also with the service I received from this vendor.

Howdy!

Our 5er a Carri-Lite 36XTRM5 is listed by the factory to have the capability of 16,000 lbs. We don't travel at that weight and its for sure the Goodyear G614 tires cannot handle that weight as seen by the 5 tire failures we've suffered. Goodyear has replaced all of the tires on our 5er on two occasion. None of the G614s that failed were over two years old. I have had Michelin tires in the past that have failed (tread Separation) and Michelin would not even consider excepting a a claim much less paying one. So I continue with Goodyear. I retained the G614 as a spare as I had just purchased it prior to having the repair work done and upgrading to the 17.5 rims and tires.

So much for all the negative input about Chinese tires; which I've been running for 4 years without any problems. ST's on the fiver, and Steers on our HDT.

I'd be willing to bet that comparative failure rates wouldn't validate Chinese tires as a solution to my previous tire problems on three 5th wheels over 15 years. I'll put my money on the Michelins (or even Goodyears) based on my experience as well as what's been reported on this and other RV forums. But then again, ya pays your money and ya takes your choice.

ST tires in general have their problems. All brands. They did even long time before china made tires were offered. And they will always have issues due to their design.

Goodyear has had issues with just about all their tires that they recommended for trailer use.

Of course most folks know the Marathon issues before the china thing. The new and improved Marathons with the circled S on the sidewall was supossed to have fixed their problems.

The Goodyear Wrangler LT had a bad history when used on a trailer. Goodyear apparantly has fixed that problem.

Inter the G614 and its problem especially with earlier dated tires. Some claim the latest dot dated G614 tires have had their issues fixed. Time will tell.

When I bought the 5'er E rated tires were offered as standard. The G rated tires I bought were an option. I has been proven to me that even G rated tires were not heavy enough. That is why I opted for J rated tires this time around. I do not think that most of the trailer tires purchased are rated high enough to do the job.

Have you weighed each axle to determine the weights being carried, or weighed by wheel position yet? Just because you trailer looks level, that does not indicate what those tires are carrying. I've seen many trailers that do not have to run level to equalize the weights on each axle.

I recently purchased a set of GY G614 tires to replace the E rated tires that came on the trailer. According to the GY dealer that I talked to GY supposedly fixed the problems they were having. Only time will tell. The GVWR of the trailer is 14,000 pounds.

There sure are a lot of G614 users in this thread. Looks like a good place to post the information in the reference. Tire dealers will not always be up front with warranty information.
