5th wheel height

Just purchased a Cedar Creek 38RTH 5th wheel toy box. The height is 13ft 5 inches. Has anyone had a problem going under bridges or tunnels in the North East, NJ, Pa etc.

In t he east you need to keep an eye out for low clearance bridges. We use RV Trip Wizard and set it for the rig size and it routes you around with height, length and weight in consideration.

Is that Actual Measured Height or Brochure listed height?

Out brochure listed 12' 8"
With 5th wheel connected and level...actual height is 13' 4"

We traveled FT using secondary/back roads ONLY (hate Interstates)
Interstates..you will not have an issue
Secondary roads....pay attention to SIGNAGE prior to overpass/trestles/ridges etc

We came across several LOW height situations....Signage prior allowed us to take Alternate route
Couple of times we missed signage/it was obstructed by overgrown bushes and we had to turn around

Look Up/Pay attention and IF in DOUBT turn ABOUT

CG entrances/trees within CG are more likely to be a problem

Do a measurement to make sure what your height is for the rig. Yes, keep an eye out for the low bridges, overheads, etc....

Stay off the Garden State Parkway above exit 105. There is a lot of confusion on this point. There is also a weight restriction for the GSP. All the the federal highways are 13'6" or higher.

Like noted, take and ACTUAL height measurement with the trailer hooked to the truck and on level ground. It will take two people, a long straight board and a tape measure.

Our Rockwood is 13'4", Garden State Parkway has several arched stone underpasses and they're under 13' except in the middle, but you can make it all the way, we do! Watch for clearance signs, they're well marked.
Try Google maps street view, you can probably read the signs!

I bought a 4-camera wireless system and used only 3 of them so far (2 back and one to watch the hitch). I am considering installing the 4th camera on top of the front A/C in case of height concerns. No 12V up there but maybe I can tap directly into the solar panel wiring with a voltage regulator.

The Cedar Creeks are either 13'-5" or 13'-6" as advertise and they are right on that mark! My 2016 Creek is 13'-6" tall as measured.


To the original poster I would buy a good RV GPS. I have one and I can enter my height, number of propane tanks and size of tank, combined length of trailer and truck plus the Gross weight of trailer and truck combined and number of axles of the trailer. The GPS will route me around low bridges and will warn of tunnels were you need to shut off your propane tanks. I have been out east with this GPS twice so far. Once to Maine and the other time to SC and NC.

My GPS is a Rand McNally RV 785 which also has a dash cam as part of the unit.

It's not legal and you should call the Turnpike which also administers the GSP. I had a long talk with one of the administrators. You can find it here as well.

The Rand McNally Motor Carriers' Atlas lists all the low bridge locations on all State Routes and Interstates state by state.
Definitely a good back-up for your RV GPS.

It’s the city and county streets that will get you. Watch for tree limbs and low hanging telephone lines. Cable TV lines are the worst. Private property such as parking lots often have wires and signage well under the 13’6” standard for interstates. Bad weather can cause lines and limbs to sag several inches too. Even campgrounds often aren’t prepared for tall trailers. You will need to add looking up to your normal left, right, forward, and behind routine. Be diligent in surveying your surroundings and you will be ok.

get your self a RV GPS that has height , length , amount of propane and weight programable! this will end 99.5% of any issue you may encounter on roads you don't normally travel.

Yes the northeast can have many secondary roads will low narrow bridges that can be good for clearing snow and AC units off your roof!

This thread sure makes me think I want a travel trailer.

With the high trucks I would be scared to be too high. I towed a 5th wheel for 7 years and always worried more about tree branch over entrances into state parks. Ok ok, plus a few arched under passes that I cheated to the middle.

I just squeezed under a few low hanging lines in my neighborhood also. Wife was watching and said I just scrapped one as it was moving. My 5th wheel was just under 13'. I would hate to be over 13'.
