5th Wheel Hitch Alignment

What do 5th wheel owners use to align the truck with the hitch. Asking for a friend.

Road work pylon in the bed of the truck.
We also just added colored tape to the kingpin for easier alignment.

On our truck centre sliding window has a logo dead centre.
I line that up with the kingpin

I align the middle of the rearview mirror with the center of my back seat with the kingpin. Three in a row and back right in.

My Ram came with a simple backup camera. The camera is located on the tailgate handle. I purchased a third brake light cargo camera and installed it. I ran the wires up to the radio and I put a switch in between the backup camera and the cargo camera. The radio monitor just plays a video signal so I can toggle between the two cameras. The only thing I wish I could figure out is it only works in while the truck is in reverse. Not a problem since I'm in reverse mostly while hitching up.

Another hack I used to do. Install that Alfred camera app on a junk phone, so you can use it Like a camera on your good phone. Place the junk phone on one of those cheap phone holders in the bed of your truck, works pretty dang good.
Here is two pics of the set up. One is the junk phone cam behind fiver head, second picture is my tablet in truck showing fiver head

I use a white tape stripe center of pinbox, and white tape stripe center of hitch. I can view them through the center rear window.

Because of my folded up bed cover, my hitch is not visible. I have a dually and the hips are the same width as the trailer. I use my mirrors to align the rear fenders down the trailer's side and I'm pretty much right on. Now, the distance of pin from hitch is a different matter so I just get out and look.

Std cabs don't need anything visual aids, you can see everything in the bed.

Quad Cab with Long Bed....I can See my hitch so I just turn around/look over my shoulder and back in

Some times just to show off I just use side mirrors along with rearview mirror and back in so truck is lined up evenly with trailer

Besides if king pin plate is about 1" lower then the hitch head it will ride up the head and center itself
**Unless a 'wedge' is used like on the rotating pin box designs
Then it has to be almost dead on aligned

I used to have a standard cab in the 70's, but the gun rack and guns blocked my view out the back window. LOL

I have a Dodge Mega Cab which is a tad bigger than most cabs so, the bed is not that easy to see into from the drivers seat. What I have done is remove the center head rest on the rear seat. I than use the center of the seat between the head rest retention posts and align this up with the king pin of the trailer in the center using the rear view mirror.

My dear wife will than insures that I am on center with the king pin and hitch head receiver. She will than adjust the height of the 5er as necessary so, the king pin head will slide up on the hitch head as I back into the trailer. Locking the single clamp jaw in-place around the king pin.

We have done this for all of the years we have owned 5er's and this always works for us!
