5th Wheel Purchase

I am now to the point where I will be purchasing a TT. Settled on 5th wheel for ease of towing. So that I don’t make a huge mistake on the purchase I am looking to y’all experts to determine the max weight I can pull comfortably . Trips will involve cross country and mountains so there’s that. Vehicle specs. GMC Denali HD gas.
GVWR 10,650; GCWR 24,000; RGAWR 6,600; Max Pay 3,342; Curb Wt 7,308; Goose 16,620; Goose Tongue 2,490. Wife me and dog will add 450 or so. Imagine hitch will add 100 to 150. Thanks for the advice. Also plan to have auto glide hitch so any recs on that would be helpful as well

Oh Boy here comes the experts.

You just posted a very loaded question on towing a 5er.

My recommendations and this is only my opinion from towing three different 5ers over the years.

I would not go over your Gross Rear Axle ratings and the Gross Combined Weight ratings. To me nothing else matters on your truck when towing a 5er.

I would (if you can now) find your weight ratings by visiting a CAT scale and weight the trailer and truck than separately to find actual weights. Use these numbers to plan on how to load and what to carry when towing.

As an example, I carry no fluids in my four holding tanks when traveling even though my CCC is over 4,000 LBS on my trailer. Why? Because I am close to my GCWR of my truck. I weigh the truck and trailer every year and adjust accordingly.

Now as far as a hitch, I use a Demco 18K Hijacker Auto Slider Hitch, for my needs with no capture plate. The trailer pin box is a Trailerair pin box that was standard equipment on my Cedar Creek when I purchased the trailer.

Thats all I can offer.

9000 pound 5th w

With a rgawr of 6600 and max pay of 3342 it appears to me a 5th wheel weighing no more than 9000 lbs fully loaded would work. Also fits within the spec of 2490 goose neck assuming 25% of weight. Thoughts on math? Thanks

Agree with jim above.

With available 6,600 R/A rating, you can carry what your drive train can easily pull. Yes, best to get separate truck axle wts, with truck loaded similar to go camping. Pay attention to scaled rear axle, lets say 3,200, plus 200 for hitch. So 3,400 from 6,600 available leaves 3,200 for pin wt. This would allow towing a FW of 14,000 lbs.

If you have the 6.6 V8, ten speed; I'd say a FW with a GVWR of 14K or less, will work for you. If you stay above the 1/2 ton towable FWs, usually 10K or less GVWR, I'll say 12k GVWR models, they will have many build advantages.

Much better built, heavier frame, heavier springs, heavier axles (5,200), which have much bigger/better brakes, bigger bearings, better tires/wheels, and larger tanks, fresh water, and holding tanks.

Look at the B&W hitch that direct fits your puck system (look at e-trailer). You will not NEED a sliding hitch, due to design of newer FWs rounded front caps.
