5th wheel question

We're new to all this RV stuff, so I have a question that should be easy for you experts out there.

Our driveway isn't steep, but it is on an incline; so when our 5th wheel is attached to the truck in the driveway, it is not level. Will it damage our slides if we partially extend them just enough to be able to load or unload our 5th wheel? Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom on this question.

How out of level are you and are you talking about large slides? If not too far out of level and a smaller slide I’d do it. I generally prefer to be as level as possible, but occasionally I’ll slide my small slide out a bit.

As long as you do not stand/walk on the floor of slideouts while partially extended.

I would check your manufacture's information, owner's manual and/or technical web site. Call them if needed.

There are different types of slides and different ways they are mounted in RVs. What is OK for one RV may be bad for another.

Generally, I''d get it as level as possible. Can you unhitch and block up the front to improve the level. Don't forget to chock every wheel on the downhill side. Use good chocks not those hard plastic types. They can slip on hard surfaces.

we park our 5th wheel on a concrete pad in our back yard that slopes down at maybe 5* but we always level after unhooking. we load the trailer for travel before hooking up so no problem having slides out. our slides use the cable system and I would worry that they could get out of alignment if deployed on a slope. anyhow, I prefer the trailer to be stowed level.

Can you roll your truck’s rear axle up on ramps to pick up the rig’s nose a bit? I’ve done that many times when overnight is a sloped parking lot, forest road, etc.

Welcome to the forum.

Make sure you don't have Schwintek slide mechanisms. They don't like to be partially extended then retracted.

Personally, I would take the extra time to level the trailer. You could extend your front landing gear and "un-squat" your truck some, might pick up an inch. This would help if your front end is low. Make sure your trailer tires are chocked. Blocks on the truck tires is probably a better idea if you have them.

When I park on my driveway, the trailer is not level side to side. I always level it with the yellow Lego blocks before extending the slides. I think leveling is just a good habit to get into.

Yes, level it. Also do not just use the landing gear, depending on the slope, it may transfer too much weight to the rear axle, possibly causing axle problems. Unhook from the truck normally then lower your rear jacks before running the front up. Don’t try to use the auto level function for this if you have that feature, it most likely would throw an error code anyway because the nose is too low. Run your slides all the way out and enjoy the room to work on loading up. Only takes a few extra minutes to do it and may help avoid problems. We have the same issue loading up at our townhouse.
