Another sewer question...
Has anyone heard of using the grey tank to help sanitize the black tank after it's been emptied?
Thanks for any advice!

When unhooking to leave a site, I always empty the black tank first. I then hold the sewer hose higher than the tanks and open the gray tank valve. I allow several gallons to go into the black tank. I shut off the gray valve and lower the hose. I do this several times and this cleans the black tank.

I have a cap for the sewer outlet. Dump the black, put on the cap, open the grey. Grey water transfers into the black tank.

Sanatize no. cause the gray tank is anything but sanitary.
And why bother sanatizing a waste (Sewage) tank.. I mean, what's the point?
I have, however heard of using it to RINSE the tank to get rid of a bit more of what does not always flow out on the initial dump
How to do it
You need a "Twist on" final valve (if your RV does not already have a 3rd dump valve)
Dump black.. Then clost the 3rd valve, open gray valve, wait a bit, close it and open dump valve. Do this a few times.. Finally open gray and dump it.

soap packets
We full time in a fifthwheel camper and usually park for 1-2 months at a time with the sewer valves left open (I know cardinal sin). When we travel, I put 2 dish washer soap packets and 3-5 gallons of water through the toilet into the black tank and let it slosh around while driving. This has worked so far for 5+ years. I should note that we don't put any paper into the toilet, instead use a waste basket.

I use regular TP and it goes in the toilet. I think I'll continue to keep the black valve closed if the cost is using a waste basket. Yuck!

Must be fun taking that cap off afterwards.

I would spill about a gallon of mixed black and gray doing that. The black valve is 2, 3" elbows back from the cap.

Best to check the location of your tanks before trying anything, but we've used the black tank to store excess grey water while boondocking and to rinse the black while dumping for 25 years. Our previous camper had both tanks on the same level and gravity moved the liquid. Our current camper has the black tank stacked on the grey so gravity won't work, at least not in the way I would prefer. I'm planning to add a pump to move the grey liquid.
I use the twist on third valve now, but had to build in the one on the previous camper as they weren't available then. There is no spillage with that setup and you can leave the drain hose attached.
I should add that we are also TP yucckers, as horrifying as that may be, but there is a reason for it that need not be discussed here. Growing up on a farm in the '50s in WV with outdoor toilets built by the govt. in the '30s probably helps to reduce the aversion. To each his/her own.
Best of luck.
Steve

YEP.......
Current 5vr (2007) and previous 5vr (1980) I installed a add'l dump valve on the common drain header. (Twist on wasn't avail and would hang out to far/low)
With it I can:
* open all three waste tank valves (black, grey, galley) and have increased 'Waste Holding Capacity'
* open grey/galley to increase just grey water capacity
* dump black then close and open greys to flush grey into black tank
Lots of combos/option with that add'l valve
