Blue Ox Fifth Wheel Hitch

Greetings. I am curious what members use to pull fifth wheel trailers. I tried to search for a thread discussion in reference to pros and cons of the different hitches out there. I have been using the Blue Ox for three years. I have had a couple of issues. I did learn that Blue Ox has stopped production of their Fifth Wheel hitch for now. Say cost was big factor. They also plan to do some re-engineering on the hitch. Thanks for any comments

I have the Blue Ox Super Ride as well. 2 years with no issues. What issues have you seen?

My camper fell off. I had pulled camper from normal parking area at my residence about 300' up slight hill to drive out. Stopped to pick up wife (handicapper) and couple of final items. Put in drive and moved, camper fell off and damaged truck bed. The lock pin was inserted. No idea of what happened. Re-hooked up and drove to South Dakota with no problems. I use to pull mobile homes, heavy equipment and spent couple years driving semi. I really have no idea what went wrong. Blue Ox inspected my hitch head and found no defects. They did replace my hitch head tho.
I have pulled my toy hauler about 7,000 in the last three years.

I dropped my RV on my bed as well, but it’s because I failed to put the locking pin in the hitch handle, so not the hitches fault. Thankfully we were still in the campground pulling up a slight hill when the jaws opened up from the back pressure of the king pin. Only my pride was injured and bed / tailgate were replaced by insurance.

I see by your experience that you would likely recognize a high hitch situation, which would really be the only other way for the trailer to come out of the hitch.

We use the B&W Companion RVK 3300 puck system hitch.

I do not know of any that are more robust or with a more sure lock system.

Yes and yes! on the B&W. I’m on my second one now and they are top shelf. Only reason I’m not still using the first is b/c new truck has the factory pucks.

I also rigorously stick the following every time I hook up.
1. always hitch up with the trailer sitting low enough that the pin box will ride up the slope of the hitch and “mash” the truck’s suspension down just a bit to lock up. this will prevent the chance of high-hitching.
2. Always do a pull test for added piece of mind.

(My biggest challenge now is reminding myself to READ MY BIG REMINDER LABEL that I put on my landing gear keypad to remind me to raise the new ground contact Solid Steps I added almost a year ago before lowering/raising the landing gear. No damage yet, but old habits sure die hard….)

Happy Trails

I also add one other procedure: "Sterile Cockpit"...no chitchat or interruptions (unless emergent) during the process. If interrupted, the procedure is restarted by rechecking each step from the beginning.
