Cable valve adjustment

I needed to clean the blade to allow it to close properly. I realized the previous owner just added the 72 inch cable for a space that needs about 36 inches.

I trimmed the sheath and metal cable, but am not sure what the length of cable un sheathed should be and how much of the sheathed is enclosed by the bracket?

As long as the cable is not altered and both ends firmly attached, the overall length is not important, it will work the same.
You are working with two solid lengths that will not stretch or shrink.

The cable was binding and would not operate perfectly. I trimmed it down but neglected to view where the cable was located on the opposite of the blade. I read the instructions and it appears 6 inches of straight line/cable on either side.
I'll wing it.
