When we go to a campground about 25 miles from home for a weekend I seldom lock anything up. I have never lost anything there and don't know of anyone having an issue with theft.
We go to a NASCAR race every year and I do lock things up just for peace of mind. I don't know of anyone having an issue in the area we camp in each year. This past year was our 25th. year attending this race. The last 12 years we have had the same reserved site which is a little more expensive than basic family camping. We have gotten to know most of those around us and keep an eye on who is moving around the sites.
I have several "Cobra Cable" locks which I secure propane tanks, my son's 3 burner "Camp Chef" stove and my 2 Honda 2000 generators with. I even wrap the cables around the legs of the 2 folding tables we have under the awning of our MH. It's not a fool proof system but would deter someone from just grabbing something and walking away. There are easier marks for a casual thief. There is also a large presence of law enforcement around all the camping areas. They patrol day and night. I feel the LE might stop someone and ask them about why they are carrying a generator, propane tank and a folding table all hooked together with a cable lock.
We leave coolers outside day and night. I have hasps and locks on them just to slow someone from opening the coolers and helping themselves. They also are tied together with cable locks.
A serious thief will get their work done. The casual thief is easier to discourage. I try not to set myself up to be an easy target for theft.

Never anything stolen. Won't lock MH basement compartment doors either. They are $1000 ea. to fix or replace, got 14. Junk inside isn't worth anything near that amount. If they do take, I get new free after ded.

We have been on the road 6 years an average about 40differnt campgrounds or more a year and the only time we had anything stolen was a bicycle seat, go figure.
We do keep our bikes cabled and covered but nothing else, heck most of the time our cargo bays are unlocked.
With that said I am not going to say that we have not stopped at a campground or two over the years and had the little hairs on my neck stand up a bit and decided to secure our BBQ as well with a cable just to keep a honest man honest (we travel with a 2 burner camp chef stove and acc.) but that has been very rare, maybe 3 times.

I think the best advice is use common sense.

I agree with the other posters, your "stuff" should be safe - I also don't lock basement doors...

Now - with that said - on our way south every year I have 2 nights I stay in what I call transient camp grounds. It is for road warriors generally for one night.

In my view, these stops would be more prone to theft than a family type camp ground and I generally do not pull much "stuff" out and leave the basements locked.

So if you pull into a camp ground where you don't fell comfortable or even safe - - do the lock down - otherwise I am with the others - - you'll be fine.

As someone also said, "Go Camping" and enjoy.

Good luck to you...

Steven Garry Sanders, your infamous RV thief of all time. A friend of mine woke up to a flash of light in the middle of the night, upon investigating, a long pole with a hook on it was fishing his watch off the kitchen counter. Turned on the lights, and the intruder dropped the pole, and was last seen making fast tracks leaving his stepladder behind. Reported to the camp office, who said they would report it to proper authorities, "NOT", bad for future business. Lock or unlock, stuff is replaceable, if you've got the money.

Do I need RV insurance? The vast majority of RV owners never had an accident and used the insurance. ...mmmmmm...

We have camped in various forms (currently a new fiver) for close to 50 years in all sorts of places all over the USA, Canada and Alaska and have never had anything stolen. We typically leave our lawn chairs, Weber Q1200 grill and other small items out, but I do keep our 3400 Watt generator cable locked in the back of the truck and under a cover. Since we travel with a small dog (now two of them) we do not normally lock our trailer if we are leaving the dogs in the trailer while we go away from the trailer, in case of fire or some other emergency warrants someone getting them out. (No, they do not bark at everything.). I tend to trust my gut and act accordingly in different overnight spots. So far, so good.

6 years full timing and have had two bikes stolen. KOA in SLC. Thief cut the cable lock. Tiger Run in Breckenridge. Bike not locked. Pretty much the only things I lock are the bikes, with a much thicker lock.
