‘22 GMC keeps telling me to check trailer wiring, so I’m starting at the truck by using a 12 volt test light on the 7 pin plug in the bed. With truck running and friend inside stepping on brake, etc. there is no output at the 7 pin. Then I connected the trailer cord to the 7 pin and checked output at the hitch assembly. Still nothing. What am I missing?

First, you are under warranty, see your dealer. I don't claim to understand the OEM brake controllers but have been told they are very sophisticated and not like your old controllers. They don't send any voltage until they "recognize" the trailer. Second, have you tried a different trailer? Could be you need to check your trailer wiring. Does the trailer have disc brakes? I had to add a resistor to my wiring so the truck could "recognize" it. The dealer is supposed to have a tool to plug into the 7 pin that allows them to diagnose and fix the problem. I went the dealer route first and was told the brakes were working as they should. Contacted Michael at Performance Trailer Brakes and he recommended the resistor. Installed it and no more problems. The issue could be in your trailer. bad grounds can trigger this message especially with drum brakes.

Turns out to be two issues: the wonderful Lippert brakes have lost magnets in two of the four wheels and shorted out the wiring, and the pickup bed electrical connector failed, so the trailer cord wouldn't stay securely in place. Lippert has committed to the brake repair and GM will replace the connector. No one is saying why this all happened at near the same time, but I suspect Arizona pot-roads.

As far as the pickup bed electrical connection. I got tired of the connection sometimes coming loose. I now use a Velcro strap to lock the plug socket cover down to the pigtail plug. Also, I changed my pigtail to a coiled cord which causes some pull on the plug when in the socket.

My in bed connector and plug is getting sloppy and loose while connected.
When I get back to Ohio, This is what I'm looking at.
Pricey, but if it works, I believe that it will be worth the money.

The small bungees wrapped around the cover also works well.

All great ideas! I’m gonna do the velcro/bungee option for the near term and see how it goes. I’ve never had this issue in 40 years of towing! What’s wrong with these connections these days?

I doubt that the OEMs use top of the line trailer connectors (Bargman, Pollak, Grote, etc.).
Low bidder gets to supply the parts.

I think the issue is the weight of the cords coupled with the bad roads that bounce that cord up and down as you travel the terrible roads found in most states.
