Combined camper/cruise to Alaska

A few years ago we took a conventional cruise to Alaska. We made friends at one stop with a couple camping/cruising in Alaska. Alaska has a very extensive and cheap ferry system. They were using the ferry system and there camper as a cruise ship. I Have thought about doing this ever since.

If there is now a way to get your camper to a starting point in Alaska, I would do this. We live on the East Coast in NC. I can envision going in our camper through the Panama canal, up the West Coast, then camper-cruising Alaska.

Leaving from Seattle X2. But I'd check prices because it isn't cheap.

no, sorry, the pricing is NOT cheap for what you are considering, unless you have VERY deep pockets! We took the ferry from Haines AK to Skagway AK, only a 45min or so ride, and it was $300 for the motorcoach and 'us' four.
I looked at the other routes and just couldn't stomach paying those rates just to use the ferry, at least with a motorhome.

It was fun, though, do at least one! (the open ferry across the Yukon river at Dawson City, Yukon, is FREE, though!)

The Alaska Ferry no longer departs from Seattle but now departs North from Bellingham, Wa although you can save some by driving up through beautiful British Columbia to Prince Rupert or as Mister T says all the way to Dawson City. Check it out.

The Alaska ferry system is fantastic but too expensive for a large vehicle. They used to allow backpackers to pitch a tent on some of the upper decks though, And those decks were covered, out of the wind and some had radiant heaters in the ceiling. They may still allow it. I would go that route anytime.

That sounds like a great idea; so , I priced it on their website. For our truck and 5th wheel it would be $8400. Yikes!
