Converter/Battery Issue

My converter will not shut off. It continually runs. I replaced it with same result. I had the battery checked and the technician that checked it said it was fully charged. The battery is overheating due to the continual charge. All fuses are fine and there's nothing on in the camper drawing any current. What can I be missing?

Measuring the voltage will tell you if it's a converter or battery problem.

If the converter isn't shutting off and dumping too much current into the battery you'll see something probably north of 15V and all the cells in the batteries will be fizzing pretty hard.

If you have a bad cell in the battery, or some other battery issue, the converter won't shut off because the voltage isn't coming up to the voltage point where a good battery would be charged. So the voltage will be below the bulk point (mid 14's) and in the case of a bad cell, it probably won't be fizzing when the others are.

The battery may reading fully charged but still have an internal short.
That will drive the voltage above 13.5, the standard float, or fully charged, maintance voltage.

If the battery was frozen, or just left sitting dead before you bought it, it will fail internally.

Did the tech just test the voltage or use an actual battery load/condition tester ?

I guess a good test would be to disconnect the batteries and see if the inverter shuts down.

Its a converter and should continue to run, supplying power to the RV.

Without knowing what trailer you have or what battery and it's age it is hard to answer but it sounds like a shorted battery. Even new batteries can be bad.

battery

i would try changing the battery. that is easy to do.

seems like when i get a warm battery, it turns out to be bad. not very scientific but it has worked for me.

If you do not have a smart converter charger and you are plugged in the converter will not shut off. I have 2009 copper canyon that will keep trying to charge batteries if plugged in. If your fridge is on then you have something pulling power and you carbon monoxide detector is pulling power as well.
