Dexter 8K Self Adjusting shoes

Our Alfa is in the shop getting its brakes done. I'm being told they are completely shot - which makes sense, we did 35k+ miles and I had noticed I was up to 10 on the controller. But......ouch.

Dealer quoted $285/each wheel plus magnets...not even gouging me really...
https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories...le/23-435.html Whats really interesting is the trailer has 7k axle ratings, but the dealer is claiming they are actually 8k axles. Possible I suppose.

so $1800 for drums w/labor and bearings, how cheap is everyone getting Titan Disks installed for? I'm tempted.

I would upgrade to disk if the bill is going to be that large. Much better brakes and much fewer parts.

Yeah, I'm likely going to regret this, but the shop i was at DID not want to do disk brakes - they quoted me $3k+ for the Titan kit plus $1-2k in labor...aka "we don't want to do this" prices.

The lady had some say here, so I'm just having them replace the drums. I shall kick myself later, no doubt. That said the service manager said the back drums were basically not doing any work at this point anyway, so its hopefully back to "6" on the brake controller....
Thanks for the reality check though.

If they are 8k the pads are about 3.5 inches wide

I am all for not making the shop do a job they dont want to do

BUT!!!
You dragged it in there with no brakes, you can drag it back out with no brakes to another shop that will do the disk conversion.

I used to sell, the backing plate out... that is the backing plate, shoes, complete NEW that fit dexter 12x2 brakes.... we sold the complete assembly for around $100... each... My 5er, has over 100K miles and I had it open this winter for a safety inspection and pack the bearings.... the shoes were about 40% but what bothered me was the wear on the magnets..... so I pulled a set of kits off the shelf and installed them...

To me.....all your numbers sound high to me... but mind you.... we didn't install parts, we sold new and remanufactured truck parts....

I'm guessing that a good technician should be able to do a wheel assembly in about an hour....

BTW if you look for a HD Brake & Clutch Supplier.... one like sixrobblees.com, they will have these on the shelf....
