I wouldn't think twice about using Eternabond tape. Great product when installed according to manufacturer directions.

Lap sealant is fine too as long as it is installed correctly and maintained.

I've used both with no issues.

Pick which method you like best and go with it IMHO as long as you inspect and maintain you won't have any issues.

Eternabond tape and Dicor lap sealant are 2 different products for 2 different uses. Both are good products when used IAW their appropriate applications.

I am a firm believer in Eternabond! I resealed all the joints on the roof of our motorhome 8 years ago. Awesome stuff, super sticky. No curling of the edges. I will never have to redo again. The only thing the tape does not like is silicone, you must be sure to remove all residue and thoroughly clean.

I always use acetone to clean, and prep the areas I'm installing Dicor, or Eternabond.

The reason for sealing the edge is cosmetic. The edge of the tape is a grey/black color. Some folks don't want to see that, so they put on a bead of sealant.

Honest question... How is the ice anymore likely to lift the edges of the tape then it would be the sealant? The tape actually has a clean straight edge, so depending on how you apply the sealant, the tape will actually have significantly less surface area and therefore be less prone to lifting.

Ask the manufacturers that tell you to seal the edges why.
Looking at it from my perspective, the sides are just as sticky as the bottom. If [Moderator Edit] sticks to the sides, weather whatever tries to lift the sides on the [Moderator Edit] stuck to there, then who knows what will happen. Better safe than sorry!! They recommend it so I'll follow it. The lap sealant doesn't stay sticky so that situation will never rear its head.

So I guess question 2 is who is they??? I have read pretty much every page on the Eternabond site... There is no recommendation to caulk. They say stick it and forget it. So, the manufacturer does not actually recommend it...

My last unit, I did all of the seams per Eternabonds instructions and when I sold it after 5 years, the tape was still in great shape and there was no evidence of leaks. One of the benefits to Etrernabond is the nice clean lines. I would hate to mess that up with lap sealant because "they" told me to, without knowing who "they" are or why "they" know better then the manufacturer.

Dicor OR Eternabond

I have read about caulking the leading edge on Eternabond’s site. Not an absolute requirement but does cleanup the edge some.

Good video,, I heard the installer say he used the calk on the Eternabond edge to prevent the slide wiper from catching the edge when the slide goes in and out. . The recommendation makes sense.

Well I didn't expect much more than you gave me, thought process is set and limited.
Everyone bitches all most daily about how cheap, shotty, ****** these RV's are.
So whats that telling you? The RV industry really doesn't care about quality.
You poke through these very same type RV things to give people recommendations.
WRONG!!!
Again, I'll say it again, the manufacturers of these membrane roof, not the RV industry is where your searching so be at.
Commercial buildings and homes with semi flat to flat roofs is where all this membrane use started, its there you will find out the proper way to install these roofs. You wont find sealants used to seal things protruding through the roof in gob piles. You use a flashing tape (your eternabond) to seal these areas, and lap sealant on the edges.

If you leave the edges exposed, now really try to think about it, you've created little mini dams where water will pool. So the sides being sticky, sticks leads to **** sticking to it, water pooled along these edges will freeze and freezing water is powerful and moves things along with winds that blow if a edge is sticking up it also plays with it. So you just create a wedge using lap sealant, protects the edges, take the bluntness out of it etc. TADA!!!!

Albert Einstein is widely credited with saying, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results." (DICOR)

Yup keep looking at RV related information. Those people who uses self drilling, Hex headed with built on washers to screw everything to a RV, Specially the roof where a flat style countersunk screw, ah well. They took on the membranes because they were cheaper than what they were using and even cut corners on that.

If you really want a different results, you need different approaches.
