Are you sure you found the dryer vent and not a heating duct? Most dryers vent out the sidewall.

Where is your washer dryer located?

Like said that is probably a heat duct for your furnace.
Wherever your dryer goes you will need to get a hole into the side and vent it out there. So there comes an issue of finding the wall supports making sure you do not cut thru one of these.

#1 Dryer vent hole
#2 Washer/dryer in place
#3 Outside vent
#4 heater

The dryer hose goes of the back and straight outside. Like has been stated the flexible aluminum in the basements heater.
