I did it for 3 seasons with a Max Tow F150. As long as you limit the GVWR of the fiver to 10K and have the proper payload, it should do well. Since the HD Payload option wasn't available for my 2011, I added SuperSprings and Bilstein HD shocks. It pulled, handled and stopped well. I traded for an F350 at 70,000 miles because of reduced commuting and a desire for a bigger fiver.
I didn't carry anything in the bed of the truck, and if doing it today, would use the Andersen Ultimate hitch for weight savings.
This link should help. The author's conclusion is that a properly equipped Ford 1/2 ton is the ONLY 1/2 capable of fifth wheel towing.

FWIW, my stickered payload was 1848 and I got a fiver with a DRY pin weight of 1410 lbs which approached 1700 lbs loaded. I didn't get a slider hitch for weight reasons, went with a Reese 16K hitch and Reese Sidewinder pin box for clearance.
