F-350 for towing

I currently have a 42’ 5er that is 16k base weight....

I’m considering the purchase of a nice used F250/F350 for towing it...

Interested in hearing from those of you that tow with either....

What do you mean by '16K base weight'?

42'.........F350 SRW minimum depending on what the GVWR is?

42'........F350 Dually for best case scenario

Read the yellow sticker on the truck door post. Some 350 trucks have lower cargo capacity than 250 Super Duty trucks.

You need the GVWR to figure out which F350

22% of GVWR for WET Pin weight......amount of weight added to the trucks rear axle (not to exceed RAWR)

Well best e Looking at an F350 DRW, if 16,000# is dry weight GVWR will be above m18,000# more like 19,000# to 20,000#.

This online towing calculator will accurately and safely match a tow vehicle to your trailer. Note, it requires actual weights in some blocks. The calculator also removes all the chest-beating and salesman hype from the decision.

IMO for that size trailer you'll love the towing stability of a dually.

It's pretty simple....with an empty trailer weight of 16K lbs, the GVWR of the trailer is going to very likely be well north of 18/19K lbs and that will need a Dually with a payload in the 5000 + lb range.

So looking from a 2008 to 2023? The older trucks may not have the necessary payload for a trailer the size you are looking at.
It would be helpful if you listed the make, model, and year trailer you are looking at.

I’d avoid the 6.4 and the 2008-2010 trucks as they have radiator leak issues and the 6.4 had some problems of its own.

I’d go as late a model year you can afford with a 6.7 and ask for service records.

What is the best F350 Duly & what rear end gear ratio,,,,the very best to haul a large fifth wheel toy hauler? Like a big grand design toy hauler….I like the Fords from 2021 and newer, because of the 10 speed automatic transmission.. ideas?

You need to be looking at the trailer GVWR and 22% of the GVWR for loaded pin weight.

That much dry weight and 42 ft long, you will need a properly equipped 1 ton diesel dual rear wheel truck.

Do not kid yourself with dry weights and brochure max towing capacity. We are selling a 40-foot 3 axle 5er that was 16,500 # dry weight and we were 19,300# loaded with no wastewater and 20 gallons of fresh water. Pin weight was 4200#/
