Fifth wheel vs Motorhome
Tonight, I finally saw the advantage of a motorhome. It was raining when we pulled into a Harvest Host for the night. There was already a motorhome there - DutchStar 4369. Power was out due to storms, they were snug and dry, running the generator.
I couldn't fit into the spot they had for us, as it was in a parking lot and I couldn't pull far enough ahead to line the back up and get it around. So the guy in the motorhome offered to swap spots- very gracious of him!
He pulled his slides in, pulled forward and backed into the spot I couldn't get into, then set up again - all without getting wet. Me, on the other hand - soaked between deploying generator and unhooking.
On the other hand - I cooked a big breakfast for dinner and had tons of counterspace, while the motorhome has about 3 feet of usable counterspace! Then I went into my office, which is separate from my living area.....so, all is not lost!

It has been said that when you have a 5th wheel, your vacation starts when you get to your destination, but if you have a motorhome, your vacation starts when you leave your driveway.

Yep - the couple days a year we run into crappy weather when we need to set up are no match for the room we have in the trailer the rest of the year!

Moho for me would be a hassle. You almost need a toad of some kind for long trips. Hooking up a toad looks like more work than unhooking the 5th wheel.
Keeping the moho in tiptop shape means you need a repair shop capable of that size, also almost 2x the hourly rate for cars and pickup trucks. I can fix my truck in my repair shop. The little RV repair I need to do is outside durng the summer.
Moho breaks down=you lose your cabin on wheels. Some repairs can take a long time. Although the same could be said for the 5th wheel, there are way less mechanical systems to break down and leave you stranded.
Licensing and insuring a moho is expensive here. Parking a moho isn't allowed in most neighborhoods, a 5th wheel squeaks by due to licensing regs.
I can see the advantage when the weather sucks like you posted. I can also see a small safety factor of being able to pack up and leave without exiting the vehicle. For myself though, we still do the occasional forest service or mining roads and that doesn't work well with a vehicle designed for paved roads only.

My motorhome has a 6' kitchen counter which is about 3 times as big as the one in our 5th wheel was. We made the switch and would have a difficult time going back.
Hooking and unhooking the toad is actually easier and it gets 25-30 MPG when sight seeing.
Overall cost of a motor home vs 5'er is higher but the convenience is amazing !

Nice. Most newer motorhomes seem to have the incredible shrinking kitchen. We have about 12' of counterspace in our fiver, and an office in the garage. One day we'll switch to a motorhome, but that will probably be when we're not working anymore.

Having a front entry door instead of the center door makes all the difference in kitchen space.

Our solution is to not drive/arrive in bad weather. We usually have the luxury to adjust our travel days to avoid wind or adverse weather.

We've had both. Our previous rv's were a gas motorhome and a 39' dp. Both nice but way too much upkeep and much more expense with the motorhomes, especially the diesel. They both have their up and down sides so it really boils down to your choice. For us, when I can no longer handle the fifth wheel I'm done.

We haul a trailer when working or playing, won't fit in a toy hauler.
