Generator

What do you carry for generator?

Portable like the Honda or built in like the Onan?

How big?

In trailer or truck?

Have had built in and portable. Depends on your power demands and available space. A portable should be secured with a locking cable or chain. Ask me how I know.

I had onboard generator in my last 3 5ers (1gasoline, 2 LPG). Current coach doesn’t. I used to go to NASCAR races so they came in handy. Other than that only had a handful of times that I needed it. We don’t dry camp. That said I find it more economical to carry a portable Honda in that front cabinet along with some other things. It worked fine for me this past February in Texas.

We used to only carry the small Harbor Freight generator thinking we would never really need one.
Now we have a dual fuel inverter generator, Sam's club online, 2,000 W, with a soft start in a/c unit. We carry it in the front compartment. Texas was a nightmare in February!

We donít boondock but do occasionally spend night at rest area. Will a 2000W generator enough to power AC etc on my 320GK?

Taj I believe with a 2000 you would need a soft start on a/c and run only one a/c

I have no experience so some seasoned people will likely reply LOL

Curious to know if you would have enough power to run battery charger as well
a fridge?

I use a 3500W inverter gen that goes/stays in the truck bed. I only take it when we're dry camping. It will run the AC, charger TV and anything else. It remains fairly quiet when running the AC and charger at the same time. When running just the Ac it barely goes off idle. I have elec start so I just reach over the side rails to start and stop. didn't get a remote start cause it wasn't offered on the model we have.

FWIW I also have a 10 year old Honda 2000W. Regardless of what I run with it it will need to rev up more than not. My 3500 running the AC is quieter than the 2000W running the charger.

We mostly boondock and so having a generator is a must for us even though we mostly only use it for AC and some charging on cloudy days.

If you uses yours much and the trailer you want allows for it, I would highly recommend onboard. No fuss, always hooked up, onboard fuel cell, no risk of theft, etc.

Onboard was a must for me, I like things simple.

Do you find the built in noisy or vibrates when sleeping?

3800 Watt Wen Inverter here and two softstarts on my AC's lets me boonedock in parking lots with ease. I leave it sitting in the bed of the pickup and the noise and vibration are tolerable. When the air or fans are on, it is almost not noticable.

Well of course there is some noise and vibration. Again the only time we use it while sleeping is with the AC on and they are way louder than the generator is. Even if only the generator was running it is a "white" noise that is just kind of there..... This can be nice if you are "urban" camping to block out most of the other noises.

Same for vibration. It is there but so minimal you do not notice it.

Even if it was a bit louder or more vibration I think the trade off would be worth it. I do not have to mess with setting up a portable, worried about storage, worried about theft either while traveling or stationary. Fuel is one of the big ones, I never have to worry about messing with portable cans, or if I topped off the generator. In theory the 5500 Onan uses 0.6 gal/hr at low load and 0.9 gal/hr at full load. I have a 30 gallon tank which means in theory I can run solid for well over 30 hours. I say in theory it seems to run way longer than that.

Carry 2-Honda 2000's in pickup all Summer long.

When more power is needed, bring along Honda 6500 in "Little Creeker" behind 5er.

most if not all 2000 watt rated generator dont have the starting current to get a 13.5K AC unit running. That is why honda and other have kits to carry the load on two generators. I would only suggest a name brand like honda or yamaha , years down the road parts my be a problem with others. I have a Yamaha EY 2800 , its 68 lbs without any fuel and can start a 15K without a easy start but I would suggest installing the micro air easy start it make the generator life much easier . The Yamaha has about a 3 gallon fuel tank and will run about 8~10 hour with the AC running , noise is very reasonable .
