Generator Storage and Transport

Just bought a Montana high country, trying to get someone that will prep the front compartment For Generator, but until then I have a portable generator. Thinking about a cargo carrier on the back of it to haul it and gas cans, suggestions? Where do you guys haul your generator and gas… The generator I have is 120 pounds I think [emoji15]…. They tell me I can’t get a mounted in front compartment generator for 8 to 9 months and it’s seven to $9000 … Of course they told me it’d be easy to prep the compartment upfront and everything like that until the check cleared now it’s hard to get them out of the phone.

Gas goes in the back of the truck. I made a holder for a small jug of gas and a small propane cylinder, so they won’t slide around.

Portable generator goes in the front storage compartment. Mine is a lot smaller
(2000 watt Honda) so it is easy to stow it. I was going to build a holder for it, but so far it has been riding fine without it. A bicycle cable lock gives me a little bit of security.

I bring mine out to operate it, but could probably leave it in the storage compartment.

Of course I cannot turn it on from inside the rig.

So, you haul it in the front compartment with gas in it?

Yes. The gas tank seals up, and the compartment is vented. It is where a generator would be if one was installed.

I opted for a Predator 3500 which I haul in the bed of the truck. Heavy chain to truck tie down rings that are welded in place. I converted the genny to run on gas or propane, and have a long propane hose to run it from my trailers propane tanks via LP quick connect.
I have a diesel truck and didn't want to have to haul propane, gasoline and diesel...

I store generator and gas in bed of truck under a trifold aluminum bed cover. When I am not hooked to the fiver cover provides security. When using the generator the aluminum cover gets folded up in triangle to dampen sound and provide fume egress. Gas can normally rides near tailgate.Click image for larger version

Does anyone haul their generator on a cargo carrier from back bumper?? If not why not? It can actually be started & plugged in without moving it & covered from the elements with a little effort…

to answer the OP: I have 2 friends who carried their Genny on a cargo carrier on the hitch. 1 was a 2000 watt Honda type in a diamond plate box along with the gas, the other was a 4500 Westinghouse on a purpose built carrier in the receiver hitch on trailer, with a purpose built wood box to cover it. he carried his gas in the truck bed. I carried other stuff on my carrier in the receiver hitch. We made it to Alaska and back without problems. Alot depends on the quality and installation quality of your hitch, and what it is rated to carry. The farther away from the camper, the more torque or leverage there will be on the hitch. Ours were right next to the bumper, and we added extra contact points from the carrier to the bumper. YMMV

Generators setting in the open are a prime target for the less than honest people. It is a simple matter to cut a chain. cable or padlock in seconds and the generator is gone. If you are going with the rear carrier, keep them covered.

Go on line and check out Norwall they are out of Az . Good prices on generators. Any decent shop can install in for you . You need to buy a transfer switch on line and get the whole thing installed together .

I didn't feel comfortable putting a 100 lb generator on a carrier with a bumper mounted hitch on the back of my TT. I had a hitch mounted on the front of my TV. It is lower than the tailgate on my pickup and TT and it is easier to lift my Onan 4500 watt generator onto it. The added weight on the front of the TV adds to the stability of my drive down the road. I can power my TT without taking the gen set off of the carrier. I have kept an eye on engine temperature and It has no effect on engine cooling, while driving down the road. I couldn't be more pleased. I can run my ac in the hottest of temps and still have plenty of power to spare for things like , my induction cook top and refridge.
