Grease Zerk on Reese Goose box

Greetings all, just curious if others have had problems breaking the grease zerk located just behind the hole for the goose ball. I think my wife may have inadvertently lowered the hitch while it was to far forward. Just curious if this only affects me or if others have had a similar issue.
Regards Ron

You're not the only one. It's in a crappy location.

While we're talking about this, do you actually grease it EVERY TIME you hook up? I've only hooked up my GB three or four times now, but manual inspection indicates it is well greased and not really necessary each time like the manual calls for.

Howdy!

I gave up on the grease zerk and now just apply grease to the ball.

I never paid much attention to the possibility of hitting the grease zerk if I miss. Appreciate the risk advisory.

Regarding greasing every time I hook up, we don't. I generally just grease up prior to each trip, which often have several stops involved over the course of couple weeks to a couple months. The grease seems to stay put and the part the zerk lubes isn't for the most part a moving part while in use so I only grease if it looks like the socket or ball could use it.

Grease Zerk on Reese Goose box

Can anyone advise it the grease zerk simply provides grease to ball area? Before I use an extractor to remove the one that broke off I would like to know if it only greases ball. If so, I will just apply some grease occasionally by hand. Regards Ron

I have seen grease come out the sides of the pin/hinge going through there when pumping it in, so it is getting some grease too.

I also think greasing the hitch every time you hook up is too much. I tried that at first (one pump of grease every hookup) and ended up with grease dripping onto the bed of the truck on a long trip. So, now I just squirt a little spray can grease on the ball every hookup (if it looks like it needs it) and give the hitch one pump of grease occasionally.
