Unhappy Hit back window support

I have a short bed Ram and slider hitch. This is the second time I made a turn on a hill and hit the truck. I thought the slider prevented this. I thought I was being careful but it seemed to release (the slider)and hit bam. You know that sound when you hear it. The tailgate was my fault but this is getting old and expensive.
DiD not break the window. New truck new 5th wheel ,40 years with RV'S !

While I agree with you if towing a 5er, just get a long bed. That said, there are reasons that some can’t have a LB to tow a 5er, and then there are those that get the SB because it looks better!
If you chose a
SB to tow a 5er, even with a slider there is a solution!

How sharp of a turn on the hill was it?

Sliders can only move front of 5vr just so far back
If the distance from window to front of 5vr is les then the distance from center of 5vr to edge...whack every time you over extend turn

Shortbed...sounds like you can NOT make a 90* turn
More likely 80* turn before WHACK

What length is your Short bed??

What hitch?
I had a pullrite that would force the fifth wheel back as the truck to trailer angle increased. It would only slide back up towards the cab as we straightened the truck.

Are you saying that the 5th wheel slider released and slid forward, as if it was in the towing position?

demco auto slide . regardless of pulling or pushing the trailer in reverse the trailer moves away from the cab by as much as 14" on there 18,000lb hitch and more for there lighter spec 5.5' bed unit.

If you forget to move a manual slide once it will cost you over $2000 in cab repairs at a min, the hitch is the cheap fix in the end. My 18K autoslide was $1800 new. I know a owner that was told by the dealer he didnt need a slide because of a long pin box and nose shape of his trailer....... $3200 later he put a manual slide add on under that hitch at almost the same cost as my autoslide. Short bed trucks need slides. If you want to save a few hundred that your choice for your lost time and convenience . dents and glass can ruin your day , trip and camper.

I agree a long bed would be so much better . I 've alway had class A or Trailer and just made the switch. Campanion $1,800.00 hitch I was told it can't hit but did. I can't jackknife to back in tight spots. It pulls easy and I like the ride. I have practiced in many parking lots and do fine. It's the hill and pitch that's got me twice. I always go slow. This not a good time to trade trucks .
Thanks for the advice and comments. Just wondered how many had the same experience.
Heading out to body shop Monday.

Overall length of bed is 68.4"

Front cap of 5th wheel is 96" W
Center of front cap to edge is 48"

Distance from tail gate to front edge of cap when fully slid back???
Less then 20.4"......whack

OP where is the pin located in relationship to the trucks rear axle ??

I've towed trailers since 1958 and using long and short bed trucks pulling GN and 5th wheel rv/non rv trailers.
As many others I towed rv trailers with short bed truck years before the hitch industry gave us a mass produced sliding hitch. No issues.

Rams short bed has a 6' 4" length since the 3rd gens came out in '03. The Dodge/Ram also has the shortest C/A (cab to rear axle) dimension. GM the longest C/A.
I use a '97 16k Reese manual slider that is located where the pin is zero over my short bed '03 Dodge trucks rear axle. This gives the max sliding distance away from the cab. However I still have to watch when backing sharp maneuvers.

A neighbor has F350 srw has a Superglide and has contacted his cab. His problem was the hitch installer screwed up and located the hitch so his pin was 4" in front of the rear axle. We relocated so its now zero over the axle and plenty cab clearance even on unlevel ground.
