Hi wnorton, I understand your point. I actually shut down the bedroom vent with duct tape on the bottom side of the louver. We like a cool bedroom. When the bedroom slider door is closed there is a gap onder the door over the steps, that provides some air circulation. Ha! when the coffee goes on at 6AM the circulating air brings the great smell up to the bedroom.
I was concerned about shutting down heat flow too much and causing furnace issues.

I did the same thing in the bedroom. The wife gets up early and turns the heat on. I like it cool in the bedroom so I blocked the vent. I know someone we will tell me it will over heat the furnace and it will shut down, but so far I've not had a problem. There are four other vents so I'm not too worried about it.

When I bought this rig I installed screen wire under the floor vent registers to prevent dirt/rocks/etc from falling into the heat ducting. Last year we were in Vegas during the winter and didn't use the furnace much. But this year we are in Texas and I know we'll need the heat so today I removed the floor registers and cleaned the screen wire I put in when the rig was new.
Wow, did those screens work! There was all kinds of pebbles and whatnot trapped in the screen. All that dirt would have fallen into the ducts but for the screen that caught it. Would have been airborne when the furnace came on. Glad I took the time to put them in.

I am sure that screen will block a significant mount of air. You should test it.

As for dirt falling into the register. That is what furnace servicing is for. Clean your ducts occasionally.

Another idea is to cover the vents with a magnetic vinyl material. Lowes/Home Depot/Menards sell vent covers that are magnetic. Buy a pack or 2 and cut them to fit. Keeps all the pet hair, crumbs etc out of the duct work. I also put vent filters in to help filter the air since most rigs don't have return air filters to the furnace.

Vent covers a good idea. I'll try them.

I can't imagine a wire window screen material blocking very much air. My biggest concern is since the vents are in the floor, spilling a liquid into one of them. That would be a mess!!

I removed the 4 plastic floor vent covers in our 2017 Jayco 27.5 RLTS and replaced them with metal covers with the wheel that opens and closes the louvers, keeping even tiny crumbs and dog hair out. (We have three labs.) I purchased them at Home Depot for five bucks each.

Our '02 DSDP had the floor registers and we had seven cats. I'd just remove the covers and vacuum them out yearly or so. Never any problems.

I did the same after discovering a hairball nest in my vents. A plus to doing this is that it keeps cold air from the AC from going to cool the basement, reducing the amount of area to be cooled so the AC keeps the RV cooler.
I got my metal vents from Lowe's. Be sure to measure all floor vents prior to heading out as mine were two different sizes.
