FWIW I attached a length of rope to my home-built wood pads to make it easier to retrieve them. Really handy when they sink in soft ground a bit. I loop the rope around the hubs (motorhome). Push in place with awning rod.

In the boat business we uses 2 x 4 cribbing. It is strong, secure, easy to build and modify for height and will not warp over time like a piece of 2 x 10 or 8 will.
