Looking to upgrade to fiver TH

Hello fellow RVers.

we got a 26 ft class C we r looking to upgrade to a fiver TH. nothing crazy. dual axle.

i keep ending up at either dead ends or the abyss (unknowns).

been beating myself up over this for a few months now and finally broke down and decided to reach out.

i知 in california so i know that already screws everything up.

so what i am struggling with is finding the right tow vehicle.

looking at 2011 or 2012 cc f350. (tight budget) trying to get away with srw. so these trucks have gvwr of 11500 and max fiver tow capacity of 15700 lbs. they also have a gcwr of 23500 lbs.

so i guess my question is, how can a truck with 11500 gvwr and 23500 gcwr tow a fiver that is rated at 15700 lbs? is this number fictitious?

been playing around with a ford load calculator and i知 looking at around 12000 gvwr trailer for srw f350

we r looking at staying below the 15k gvwr for the trailer to stay out of NCCA territory.

so we look at 2011 f350 duallies. 30000 gcwr. good. bad. that痴 over the 26001 gvwr / gcwr exemption threshold in cali. if i知 reading the law correctly.

so what happens if i exceed the 26001 limit? am i now in MCP territory?

so i am guessing the unicorn i知 looking for will allow me to tow a 14999 fiver trailer while staying below 26001 lb threshold and being able to haul a 4 seat sxs.

or the fiver TH rated at 12000 gvwr and having 4k cargo capacity and a pin weight around 2400lb?

or the srw pickup that has a gcwr of 26000lbs that fits within my budget?

my head hurts......

any and all advice is welcome. thank you.

Youre overcomplicating. Gcwr and gvwr arent legal numbers. How slow do you care to go up hills, how much follow distance do you want to give, those things.

A gas truck will have much higher payload number BUT in your price range none of the gas trucks from any brand will like pulling a 14000lb 5th wheel on any kind of grade. The payload of a diesel crew cab 4x4 is greatly reduced and you will find a 350/3500 single wheel truck will max out the rear axle rating around 14000 ~15000 lb gvw trailer . Ford has one of the highest payloads on there trucks because of the tire size. so I would suggest a F350 with a 6.7l powerstoke and the 2nd generation (2018 and newer) just from refinements made to the trucks . At 16,000 lb 5th wheel is going to put roughly about 3400~3600 lbs right over your rear axle, most single wheel trucks are about 3300lbs on the rear axle empty. hitch , wife and kids all need to be added into the payload numbers. typical is 22% of GVW is the pin weight of the trailer after you load it for a trip.

SRW trucks from that era will top out around 12,000 pound 5er. Even a new F350 is marginal to overloaded at 14,000 plus. If very careful about loading you may get a new F350 SRW to be within weights at 15,000 plus but it will be a sketchy tow. After 15,000 it is solidly in duelly territory.

thanks fellas,

yes i figured i was over complicating things.

so from what think i have found, trailer capacities assume the tow vehicle is unloaded?

makes the numbers match up i guess. 7800 unladen + 15,700 trailer = 23,500 gcvw. sounds like some misleading marketing.

i noticed the newer model srw’s have gcwr’s close to the older duliies. but not in budget.

anywho, gonna bite the bullet and try to get a dually. got a 2012 350 crew cab i’m looking at with 100k miles. single owner, clean car fax, no mods, tow package . got pre-purchase inspection scheduled for thursday. hope all checks out ok.

fiver trailer 15k gvwr and over requires non commercial class A in Cali. going to stay under this for now.

thanks again for the replies!!

I lived in a three axle Cyclone for a while back in 2011-2012. It was heavier than what you're looking at, but with any toy hauler you really have to watch the pin weight. They tend to be built with the axles further back on the frame than other 5ers. There's a teeter-totter effect with heavy toys in the back. Maximum pin weight for me came when I was running with nothing in the garage. My 2011 F350 dually never had any problem pulling it and the dual wheels were great for cross winds, but it would squat over 4". I got individual wheel weights done at a rally and confirmed everything was sound, but I was at the limit for pin weight. I'm not sure you can trust the brochure weights. If you find the exact model you want, maybe you could ask here if anybody has actual weights on it before pulling the trigger. OTOH, if you're stepping up to a one ton dually and staying around 15k trailer weight you should be fine.

DONT BUY A 6.4 Powerstroke. They are problematic.
Go 6.7.
