My input would be to do the factory tour of any / all the factory direct manufactures you are considering. Meet the company officials, owners, principals, etc. You can learn a lot in the one on one setting.
We spent a full day at each manufacture we were considering, basically interviewing them on not only how / why they design and build the way they do, but how they personally interacted with us, communication skills, etc. which was instrumental in our final decision.
For example, we got to witness a principal at one manufacture deal with an irate owner directly regarding a warranty issue on a 1 month old unit. That was eye opening and changed our perspective of that manufacture dramatically.
We had planned our visits well in advance, reserved dates with each, put together and shared our agenda of the items we wanted to see / touch / discuss and let them all know that we were doing the same with their competitors and who they were. Some were well prepared when we arrived on the appointed day , some were not.
This was not a cheap process, thousands spent on flights, cars, hotels, meals etc. but we felt the expense was justified and in the end that we made the best informed decision for us. YMMV
