Magnum Gen Auto-Start

I was under the impression when ordering our unit that the auto-start feature was standard with the generator. It's not. So, does anyone have any experience with these? (Or something similar)

If you have a magnum inverter with a RC or ARC remote than that is a great addition. You can set it to start the generator based on inverter load, and or battery voltage. If you have the BKE You can set the generator to start based on battery state of charge. and also program a top off. If you have quiet hours set. It will run the generator for a bit before the quiet hours to help you make it thru the night.

Now if you dont have these things, than you need the stand alone version.

ME-AGS-S

They are worth their weight in gold. Never worry about your batteries going dead. And you can also set it to turn on if it gets to hot. Thus your AC will turn on and save your pets from the heat.

The magnum remotes look like this:
Magnum Energy ME-RC50 Remote Control Digital LCD Screen

Imarineusa is a good place to buy Magnum equipment.
Be aware if you get an AGS wiring to the inverter is a telephone type cable (easy) but you would have to run wires to the generator...

Your controller is the MM-RC. This means you likely have the MM1212/MM612 or MMS1012 inverter. It should be a black box almost pare shaped. Also modified sine wave. This inverter is not compatible with the networked version of the gen start module. there for you would need to use the stand alone unit I linked to in previous post.

If you have the MMS series you can upgrade to the fancier remote control. But it is still not compatible with the AGS.

Now if you are looking to drop ~$2200 bucks, you can go with a MS series pure sine wave inverter, advance remote, battery monitor kit and auto gen start. But its a bit harder to pull that one out over just the $200 for the ME-AGS-S to control the generator.

Thanks for all the help.

Looking at the documentation provided by the factory, it appears that we have the MM1212 inverter. The inverter is setup to only supply power to the fridge when we lose shore power, but my reasoning for wanting the auto-start is to have the generator turn on for the AC to keep the coach cool in the event that we lose power with the dogs inside and us gone, like you mentioned already.

So with that in mind, we would be best off with the standalone version. Is this a pretty difficult install? Or with everything being tied in at the control panel will that make things significantly easier as far as running wires are concerned?

Installed and then wrote the installation instructions specific to my coach for an MS2812 with AGS & Remote here: Replacing M380 Trace modified sine-wave inverter with pure sine-wave Magnum MS2812 - Wanderlodge Owners Group

Although tailored to a different setup, you may find the pictures and description helpful - especially with respect to the AGS & Remote. The AGS has a temperature sensor line/capability which you can set to keep pets comfortable. For your installation, recommend you contact Magnum directly to inquire as to how best to configure your setup. They were very helpful when I was installing mine.

Have been very happy with this Magnum unit.

Very, very helpful. I really like how detailed the steps are. So looking at your thread on the other forum, am I correct in thinking that the auto-start remote will replace the MM-RC remote?

Attached is a picture of my control panel. You can see the monitor for the surge protector on the top left, the generator start switch and hour meter below it, the power management system display on the right, and the MM-RC down below on the right. With this setup would you think wiring still needs to be ran to the generator?

I don't know since I'm not familiar with any of the other Magnum lines. That's why I recommended you call them directly; ask for their technical support. I found them to be very helpful. Tell them what you have and what you are trying to accomplish, then they can recommend which "black boxes" you need to get the results you seek or even if it can be done with what you already have. In my case, the MS boxes each work perfectly when networked together via their telephone cord "LAN cables". I simply tied the existing generator start/stop wiring that ran between the old inverter and the generator to my new inverter. If you do not have such a link, then yes a line will need to be run between the generator and the AGS box, assuming it can be done. Again give Magnum a call.

I have the Magnum AGS-S installed in my MH. Easy to do. It parallels wiring to generator start switch on panel in your picture. Had mine for about 6 years with no problems except if power is lost to control. Setting for quiet time clock needs to be reset. We do not use generator in places that require generator quiet time.
It is set to start when battery voltage gets to 12 volt or temperature inside MH gets above 82° AC is set to 80°. Keeps the dog happy.
If I had a larger inverter that had the network I would go with a digital remote and AGS-N.
If you have a Onan generator. There is a Generator Auto Start available.

We do have an Onan genny. Your link doesn't seem to be working though. I'll do some searching. Is it an Onan part?

Not sure why link does not work. Here is a link to a iRV2 thread.
