Montana 5th Wheel Hitch Weight

Iím having a hard time reducing the hitch weight of our new 2019 Montana 3810MS 5th wheel. The rear axle weight of our 2018 RAM 3500 w/6.7 Cummings is over the GAWR by 440 lbs. Weíve taken the heavier items out of the front storage compartment and added some water in the Fresh water holding tank but it didnít help much. Short of getting a smaller/lighter 5th wheel, Iím out of ideas. All help is greatly appreciated.

not to pry but what are your weights and ratings? we have a 2015 3500 DRW and it has a RAWR of 10,000 lbs. we tow a 16,000 lb 5th wheel and only have just over 7,000 lbs on the rear axle. perhaps a 3500 SRW axle might have a lower rating that the DRW.

adding fresh water helps only if the tank is behind the trailer axles. locate the tank or confirm its location

You should have a pin weight of around 4100lbs on on that 5er. What is the RAWR of your truck.

2018 RAM 3500 SRW has a 7000# RAWR
So you got weighed and rear axle is weighing in at 7440# ???

What is the Tire Max Load Rating stamped on sidewall?

2019 Montana 3810MS GVWR is 16,700#
What is the WET Pin weight?
Dry pin/dry trailer weight is 21%
21% of 16,700 is 3507#

What are the axle weights?

Post the 'weigh ticket' numbers......

I assume you have a SRW truck???
As long as your under tire weight ratings, I guess your choices are, do nothing. Trade for a dually.
Rams can be equippped to tow up to 36,000 pounds. Of course that does not inply it can carry 7200 pounds in the bed. But they can be equipped to carry a lot. Your next option is swap for a 4500 dually.

What hitch are you using? Some are quite heavy...

Long bed or short?

What are the truck weights W/O Trailer?

What are you carrying in truck bed....hitch and anything else?

What is trailer PIN Weight?

Do you have a generator in front compartment of trailer?

Curb weight of truck rear axle should be roughly 3200#
7450 - 3200 = 4250 pin weight
(25% - 27% pin weight...HEAVY Pin!)

Dry pin is only 21% ?????

i'm certainly not an expert.

we tow a very similar sized trailer. it does have a generator in the front generator compartment but the generator is only 300 lbs.

our rear axle weights (truck and pin) are around 7300 lbs. the pin is carrying 22% of the total trailer weight. you seem to be at around 7400 lbs. this looks very similar to our configuration.

i don't know the layout of your trailer so what follows is just ideas.
1. we carry a few tools and maintenance supplies in the trailer front storage compartment. their combined weight does add up. i have thought about getting a storage bin for the truck bed and securing it to the bed right behind the cab (in front of the rear axle) and putting the tools into it.
2. we have 12 gallon water heater that is towards the front of the trailer. if it has water in it that is 100 lbs of water.
3. is your trailer being towed level? if it is not level you might be able to transfer some weight be leveling the trailer.

i hope this helps.
