Need help on Tool Box / Tonneau Cover Combination for F350
Hi Everyone!
I was fortunate enough to buy an awesome 2021 F350 6.7 Platinum. Time now to get some options figured out. I'll be towing a 5th wheel. Planning an Alaska trip and upgrading to a 60 gal S&B fuel tank. Looking for recommendations on a tool box (won't need the fuel/box option) in the bed of the truck and a tonneau cover. I'll be using the tool box to stow chocks, leveling blocks, air compressor, and other camping stuff. Would need easy access to the tool box when we get to our campground. Looking for a nice locking tonneau cover to cover the bed when not towing and would fit up snug to the tool box.
What suggestions would you have for the tool box / tonneau cover combination?
This is my first truck. I'm pretty excited to take it out towing in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

I don't have any input on the box (though I'll be looking at one soon), but be careful that if the cover that you select requires tracks to be installed on the top of the bed rails, that those tracks doesn't sit too high above the bed rails.
I believe that the minimum bed rail clearance you would want is 6".

I got my tool box at Lowe's and tonneau at Extang. To open the tool box, I ran a string from the handle back to the tailgate - open the tailgate and pull the string to open.

I have a 40 gallon fuel tank with a tool box on top in back of the cab.
I also have a rear of the bed tool box that I mounted on drawer slides in order to have it slide out over the tailgate and I use a ratcheting cargo bar to keep it from moving. The tonneau cover is a Truxedo Lo Pro Soft Roll Up Truck Bed Tonneau Cover

My vote goes to a Roll-n-Lock cover. I've had 3 and will soon be installing another one on my new truck (assuming Ford actually builds it). It is a had top, it locks, and rails are only about 1/4" high.
Then I'd look for an undercover tool box. Although I use 2 waterproof plastic boxes; one for my Viair compressor and accessories, another for storing fuel additive. My chocks and stuff is just tossed in the bed and, since the cover locks, I feel it is sufficient, and I don't have to go rummaging through a big tool box.

You are going to have a ton of storage in your 5th wheel belly also . Plenty of room for many of those items you want to haul in the bed .

I looked at options to add a tonneau cover to my F250, but none of them worked with my low-profile tool box (that I already had). There are several made specifically for use with a tool box, but just make sure you don't get a low profile box so the latches to open the box are above the cover (unless you can run a string or something like akgourmet above).

Check out a store called Dually Depot, there is one in Goshen, Ind. I found a short 5th wheel box there in August 2020 for $300. On-line it was over $490 since it had to be truck shipped.
This box is at the tailgate and short enough the 5thwheel clears it. It is big enough to hold allot of items. Also at the front of the bed I have a large tool box for extra items I keep in there. I got this at Tractor Supply Store.
For the cover we use a BakFlip G2, it is a quad fold hard cover. It protects everything in the bed, but it is somewhat heavy to fold standing on the ground. You can lock the tailgate and the cover is secured.

Yep. All 3 were. The cover material over the aluminum slats hold up very well. With luck I'll sell mine next month and get an 8' cover.

Had a friend that had a soft roll up cover, that the forward part would flip back to expose his below the rails tool box. We have a standard soft roll up cover that is fine, but his was just that much better.

Check out an American Work Cover. They aren't cheap but I like the idea so much I'm going to do a deep-dive to see if it will work with my long bed.
And nothing beats a hardtop, canister cover for security and ease of use.
If you don't like the American Work Cover then absolutely investigate the Roll-n-Lock.

I'm likely the odd man out again, pretty normal. That 5W will have lots of storage and I would carry TOOLs in the tool box unless you don't do any work on the truck or trailer. A full set of wrenches, sockets, screw drivers ( carry a cordless impact) with drills & screw driver bits, plus the adapter for sockets. An air compressor, tire plugs, fuses, check your Ford it takes a different fuse, a millimeter for electric trouble shooting, a good hydraulic jack that can lift the truck or 5W. Some short sections or pex tubing with a pex tool, hose washers and the list goes on. I carry that and more for fixes on the road plus an 80 gallon transfer tank so I can fuel when I want not when I need to, lets me look for the best fuel prices as I travel. (The reds a dog ramp I use to load my service dog)
Trailer stuff is in the trailer, chocks, Lego blocks, sewer hose in the rear bumper, water hoses etc are in the front storage area. I have gone to all the collapsible hoses to save space but we do not drink from them, drinking waters in 3 gallon jugs. I have a fold down rack on the rear with a Champion 3100 generator, and gas for it. I have a vinyl cover for the gen set my wife made, it's locked to the rack.
