I wouldn't go anything less than a drw, 350/3500 doesn't matter. Getting into the 450/4500 and up gets you into chassis only trucks, you would still need to get a box for it. I have a 2014 ram 3500 srw cclb ctd, I tow aprrox. 13k, it has a 4340 ccc, for an 18k trailer, I would definitelygo with a dually.

I tow w a 2017RAM 3500 DRW. 5615 payload / 25k tow capacity. Even at a high of 4K pin weight should have plenty of capacity left. The big plus to me is ride is much better than 450/4500 class trucks. Downside is it is plenty wide. A handful in downtown Austin. Only made that mistake once. Luckily I have a 1500 short bed crew that is my daily driver.

In the case of the Ford it has the wide track front end the that makes turns easer, along with bigger brakes and 19.5 wheels/tires. The are available in all the trim levels and they also come with a bed.

No question if you are going to tow that much weight you need a 350/3500 DRW.

Note: payload includes everything in the truck (cargo, passengers and fuel) along with the pin weight.

Note that the 450 comes in two flavors: a class 3, 14000 lb GVWR pickup and a class IV 16500 GVWR cab and chassis model. (You'd be responsible for getting a flatbed or hauler body but the dealer can help with that)

They both have their place but the class 3 version would probably be sufficient for a 18000lb FW (that's GVWR, not dry, right?). 4700 pounds and change payload for a well equipped truck. Insurance will be easier with the class 3 and registration will be cheaper. Either way, you're going to a commercial tire place to buy your tires.

The F350 SRW is only rated to 16,000 lbs. You need a dually which will also give you the 4:10 or more gearing you need.

Each vehicle manufacture will publish a towing guide for the specific year models. I suggest you do your own research for the year / manufacture you may be looking for .
As an example attached is the guide regarding the 2014 model year from ford, of which I happily own an F450 ... the newer models have even greater capacity and features.

Not only is it about how much it will tow but about control, stopping, as well comfort and usability - you wont be in trouble with too much truck, but too little....

+1

The issue will be payload, not towing capacity. At 18k pounds you are in dually territory. The sticker on my door jamb is 5,293 lbs.

I'm towing an 18k Landmark. Pin weight is 3920 the last time I weighed. My truck is a '15 F350 DRW, payload is 5850!

Since you're in the market for a truck to pull that trailer i'd just go with the F450. If you already had a F350 DRW there's no reason to upgrade. But again, since you're in the market. Price difference isn't much.

Sticker price isn't much different but selling price is...at least in my neck of the woods. 350 DRWs get steeper discounts than SRW 350s then 250s then 450s.

Yeah, it can vary by location. I have no problem getting any of them at invoice minus rebates. Any discounts beyond that can vary.

Big/main difference is 350 has higher payload, but 450 has wider stance and bigger brakes.

I’m pretty sure if you order the truck you can get a DRW F350 with the wide stance front end package. Not sure if it includes the bigger wheels or not.

I’d definitely go with DRW. I just picked mine up last week with a dry weight of 14k on my F250...it did it and it wasn’t bad, but it would have been a lot nicer ride in a DRW. My next truck will be one. Granted I don’t tow very often and stay in one spot for months.Click image for larger version
