Whether or not someone makes it to GVW is dependent on a whole host of variables including the trailer or fiver design , how long of a trip how many people and the destination. It may be real easy to get to gvw, and it may not.

You’re good. Maybe a little on the border but good. We have pulled a 40 Cardinal for 6 years with our f250. Zero problems.

There is no doubt your truck will pull it, just be known even if you don't go all the way to GVWR on your fiver, your pin weight at 9500 (50% of your fiver ccc) is 1900 lbs and that leaves you 168 lbs of your trucks ccc.

20 percent of 10,000 pound fivers GVWR equals 2000 pounds. Add 350 pounds for a slider hitch for a short bed truck add up to...........
Pin weight will be between 17 and 25 percent of the fivers loaded ready to travel weight. 20 percent is the accepted number for most folks. Since you dont own the fiver yet, make your calculations based on worst case. That means the fivers GVWR. As full timers your very likely to be right at the GVWR.
As far as the truck? Newer 2400 series trucks usually have a GVWR of 10,000 pounds. Depending on configuration they can have a scaled ready to travel weight between 7500 and 8000 pounds. That means you could have as little as 2000 pounds available cargo capacity. A plus B means you could be overweight. If you really want to go full time you more than likely will find the fiver is not big enough, so plan on upgrading both soon.

I just LOVE people claiming they pull a 40 foot 15,000+ pound plus fiver with a 250/2500 with no problems. Its obvious they have never driven across a set of scales in their travels. Otherwise they would have upgraded to a truck more capable of handling the load.

Ok, here goes. If you want to drive 55 in a 70 mph zone and have semi trucks zooming past you like others towing a 5th wheel with a little 250/2500 series truck go right ahead and get the 5th wheel.

I can never advise carrying more weight than the truck is designed for. For the last few years the 250/2500 series trucks are not like the 350/3500 series trucks. Now the axles are different, the spring pack and probably things different.

I see so many little trucks towing 5th wheels in the right lane on the highway trying to do 62mpg and two hands on the wheel trying to stay in their lane. You guys know who you are. Oh, sure you are retired and are not in a hurry...well how about the truck driver trying to make a living?

Your 2018 2500 has similar ratings my 2007 3500 SRW has.
You have more RAWR then I do.....


I tow a 14K 5th wheel with a 3080# wet pin weight
That puts me right at my 6200# RAWR/Under my rear tire max load ratings (3195#/2X)
YES I am over the MFG. GVWR, yes I am over the MFGs payload which is based on GVWR minus Curb weight
AND I do not care because neither Mfg number have an legal standing---they are numbers used for Class Distinction, Warranty Isses and Registration Fees.....period


YES you can tow that 10K trailer...safety and within ratings that matter

I really don't want a TT, I guess we may have to look at lighter fivers? Some of the online searches I've done, show heavier fivers, but lower hitch weight?? How is THAT possible?

I am one that has in the past encouraged those looking to buy a 5er to look at a
350/3500, BUT if they already had a 250/2500 I advised that it was their decision to tow over GVWR, it respect tire and axle ratings!
I towed a 12,500 5er for several years, running between 1,500# and 1,700# over our 2001 Ram 2500 8,800# GVWR. I had a small chip (50 hp and 100# torque). I had 3.55 gears and stated max GCWR was like 16,000# I was at about 21,000# and NEVER had an issue going the speed limit +!
It is the OP’s choice but that 2500 is just as capable as a 3500 SRW.
Just to add I never needed air bags, as I was within axle and tire ratings.

We’ve towed our 40 ft Cardinal for 4 years with no problems. Did put support springs in rear of our f250. However, we recently purchased a sundowner toyhauler which is 2000 pounds lighter but are going to upgrade our truck because the ales are much farther back and even though it’s much lighter, there’s more weight on the truck and the difference is very noticeable and not in a good way.

This was not the case for me. My trailer loaded was 13,700lbs. With my 6.4 gas & the crappy gears I currently have (3.73) my max towing is supposed to be 12,640. I was still under my axle max by more than 500lbs. Hoping to switch to 4.56 gears this winter which should help it climb the hills a little better for a gasser.
