Permit for towing??

Was watching youtube (can be dangerous) and kept hearing about trailers over 40' in length requiring a special permit to pull as it's over just about every states RV towing length limit. There was a reference that if you are pulled over and your towable RV is over 40' you could be be required to disconnect the RV and have it towed out of state at your expense. Anyone ever heard of this? I've been looking around various sites by state and the trailer length ranges anywhere to 40'-45' with an overall max combined length of 65', TV+RV, in most states.

We're not looking to get into a 40'+ rig but are interested in an overall length of 37' rig, preferably 35', for full timing as it's just the 2 of us.

How are these big HDT RV haulers getting around these length limitations when they are clearly over the 65' threshold when towing a 40'+ rig? Just curious.

If you're not commercial, no permit required. We have a 46' 5thwheel and tow with a converted semi truck. 67' overall. Many of our friends are in the 70'+ range and have never had issues.

Many state laws are not being updated to current RVs being made, and also are vague about just who/what type trailers are being referred to. Don't worry about this, it is a non-problem.

Another thing to remember is that a 40' 5ver is only about 35' or so, given the fact that 5' of it is in the bed of your truck. So 35' plus the length of your truck, let's say 22' takes you to 62'.....which is legal in many, many states. Plus, the highway patrol in most of those states have much to much to do besides pulling over a RV that might be a few inches longer than some antiquated law allows.

RV length limit laws include commercial or non commercial length vehicles My state is 42' for rv trailers. My dot guy says they don't bother rv trailer owners unless the combo is handling badly to the extent their a danger to other drivers on the roads. Then they may roll a wheel/tape.
If your concerned most state have a day permit for traveling through.

My HitchHiker is 36’ and a 8’ bed on my tv puts the combination at 53’ overall.
