Proper clearance between bed and rv
Hi folks,
My Carriage Cameo has a goose adaptor on the fifth which is really handy to pull with my BW turnover ball. It seems a little nose-high. I have about 8” between bed and bottom of rv. I can raise the pin box one set of holes and then fine tune final height with the adapter.
It tows well. No problems on clearances with rig to trailer.
What height/clearance do folks recommend? What are the detriments to towing slightly nose high?
Thanks

Nose high
Lowers pin weight.....chucking
Transfers weight to trailers rear axle....excessive tire wear
6" bed rail clearance would be Minimum
7" bed rail clearance would be Ideal

So I’m at 8”. Would 1” lower make a noticeable difference? In other words, is it worth screwing with it to go from 8 inches down to 7 inches?

Depends on how nose high trailer is vs level.

level it
I towed my Sierra 375RKS with my 06 Dodge Ram 3500 Mega Cab with 6.5 inch bed clearance. Had no issues. Level your camper out. It will tow better

The closer you are to level, the better it should tow. I'd lower to the 7" if it were me.
Happy travels!

I generally agree with the consensus that level (and 7") is ideal. Especially level.
Now, in the real world if my clearance were 8" I would sure be tempted to try it before changing. On the other hand, once you tow it once, how likely are you to correct it if it is not urgent? You'd be tempted to leave it "OK" rather than "correct".
That's why I would move it and evaluate, rather than evaluate first...

IMO, if you only need about 1" to get the FW to level, use the GN adaptor. The pin box is most likely a 2" spacing, so you're moving down 2" and back up 1" to get to 7" clearance. Frankly, if you're only 1-2" nose high, I don't think it's worth messing with unless your ADHD and just =have= to be perfect. :-) I towed my old Komfort about 3" nose-high for almost 15 years with no issues. No difference in suspension wear or tire wear. A small bit of chucking, but it was as much due to the roads as anything.

Measured my cab and truck rail clearance and it was 8 inch and very close to level. Agree with other that level is the key.

I have 8" clearance. I don't think it looks nose high.

Look, even if you are 1" high at the pin, spread over a length of a 30-45' trailer, is insignificant.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve been pulling it like this for the last two months or so and it does just fine. The gooseneck adapter is set at its lowest point so the next thing for me to do was to move the pin box. Sounds like something that I might do “when I get around to it“. I’ll post a picture of my rig. It is nose high but my truck also sits a little higher and I do have airbags.

Your rig sits absolutely perfect. Mine is obviously nose high in comparison. I will do some adjusting and see what I can figure out. Maybe adjust the pin box an inch or so and also drop 1 inch with my airbags.

Here's a pic of it. Not perfect but have seen worse. I'll probably adjust it a little.
