Reese Goosebox - What To Check?

I’m trading in my 32’ TT for a 34’ fifth wheel (Grand Design Reflection 28BH) which I’m picking up Friday. As part of the deal I asked for a Reese GooseBox be installed. This is my first fifth wheel and I chose the GB for two reasons: use of bed when unhooked, and off-road shock absorption.

Anyway, this is the first GB that my dealer has ever installed (official pickup date was two days ago but they ordered a gooseneck adapter despite me telling the salesman the exact Reese part number I wanted). Makes me nervous. Any feedback on what I should check for when taking delivery? I’ve heard mostly good things about the GB but also that it can be harsh if not setup correctly.

You may be getting a Generation 2 Goose Box, so this may vary. Gen. 1 has colored tape on the side. Inflate the air bag until you see the green tape. I believe Gen 2 has a hole on the side and you air up until you see the correct level in the hole. Put a shot of grease in the zerk at the hitch point. When hitched just make sure the hitch release is back in the locked position. Locked and Unlocked are written in large letters and easy to see.

As far as set up, make sure when you back up the trailer misses the cab and the hitch misses the side rails of the truck when turned. When the hitch is aired up, you should have at a minimum 6 to 7 inches of space between the truck rails and the camper.

Most states require chains for a goose neck, so make sure they installed chains and you have points on the truck to anchor them to.

Read these install instructions to double check what the dealer did:

Then, just enjoy the ride.

Gen2 vs gen1. Really only different in the hole vs tape?

OP. Also report back on how you like it. Congrats

I asked for a gen 2 part number so that is either what I’m getting or I’m waiting for the dealer to finally get it right. I was already supposed to pick up the unit on Monday and they tried putting some junky gooseneck adapter on it even though the goosebox (with specific part number) was written into the deal....

Thanks for the advice, will let you know after I pick it up tomorrow!

No, there are more upgrades to Gen 2. See this video for all of them:

As discussed in the video, be sure the attaching bolts are torqued correctly. I have read where guys that had the dealer install the GB found improper torque.
