Scooter carrier
Hi all -
I am looking for a platform/carrier for the back of the fifth wheel to carry a scooter -50cc moped. I cannot seem to find one other than a hydraulic (not needed) or a hitch model. Anyone know of any other solution? Thanks.

Hitch model is probably all that is out there other than having a custom carrier fabricated. Friend of mine Has about a 4 inch wide ramp included to push the scooter up into the carrier. Has had it a bit over 2 years now I believe

I had a front hitch receiver put on my truck. I bought a hitch motorcycle carrier that plugs into the 2" receiver. It is rated to carry 500#. My Yamaha 250 weighs in at 330#. I have no problem with it on the front and my travel trailer behind. Just google hitch motorcyle carrier for options.

Sherri,
I bought a hitch type carrier for my 230# electric moped for less than $100 delivered on-line. At that price, you could have someone modify it to fit behind your 5th Wh.
Any chance you would have enough clearance to hitch mount a rack on your dually
UNDER the 5th wheel? Maybe with a step-down hitch receiver?

okmunky - I thought of that but I am really worried about the clearance AND the weight on the truck. Fifth wheel weighs about $16k after fully loaded.
Does anyone know if the fifth wheel can pull a small utility trailer???

Be aware that you're entering a whole different world when you do this - it's called towing double. Not all states allow it, and some that do require special driver license endorsements.

Personally, I think that a "front mount" is the smartest Idea as suggested by Texas.

Before you do this, take your truck to a set of truck scales (available at just about any major truck stop) and get individual axle weights. The Cummins 6.7L diesel is a heavy piece of iron, and you may not have the reserve FAWR (front axle weight rating) to handle this. The front axle weight rating can be found on the driver's door sticker that gives tire inflation pressures, GVWR and axle weight ratings.
5th wheel hitch placement (many manufacturers recommend installing the hitch with the centerline of the pin bore 2" to 4" ahead of the rear axle centerline) and the overhang distance of the carrier and scooter in front of the front axle will both add more weight to the front axle. If you'll come back with the front axle weight and your truck's FAWR, we can help you interpret the numbers before you get too far down this road.

I had a rack installed on the back of my 5th wheel. It has 2 receivers added to the frame. Very sturdy, the motorcycle is 270lbs wet, the rack and bicycles around 40lbs so total weight is around 310 lbs. This is about the same weight as my fresh water tank if filled. So far traveled from Florida to Wyoming with no problem.

Sherri, our neighbor had a carrier installed on the rear of his 5er. It was custom made, but looked terrific. He carried a larger generator, bicycles, and additional propane tanks in the add-on. It was attached directly to the frame, and was adjusted upward behind the 5er to eliminate any possible contact with the road surface, drives, etc while moving. Just a thought.

You really have to watch putting things on the back of a 5er, there is a lot of bouncing back there and puts a lot of strain on everything. Be aware that putting a rear rack or carrier on your 5er will void the frame warranty. Your RAM, even with the CTD, has plenty of spare front capacity for a front carrier. Was carrying an old Suzuki FA50, now carrying a Zuma 125. Here is what I have.

My 2002 Ram 3500 Cummins HO/6-speed weighed 4380 on the front axle. Front axle GAWR was 4500 lbs. I really think it would be better to base this decision off of hard numbers rather than subjective speculation.
