I looked on top of the used fifth wheel we bought last year, I see that around the roof vents they have the white sealer which is the brush on type, can't remember the brand.
I did buy some to use, anyways on top of that they have coated it with silicone, I have been told that it is not good to do that.
I was told the best is to clean it all off and use the white stuff I bought.
Sorry, I should have added it is an aluminum roof.

Should one take all the old silicone off and clean up the old white and reapply it again?
I was told silicone is not the thing to use.

I've used silicone as an emergency fix for a roof tear during a thunderstorm as it is one of the few sealers that will stick to wet EPDM (rubber) roofing material. Once I got back to civilization, however, I cleaned it off and did a proper fix.

Your EPDM roof requires special maintenance materials. Among these is the following:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">EPDM Rubber Roofing Lap Sealant:

Dicor Lap Sealant helps create a watertight seal along a roof's edges, around air vents, vent pipes, air conditioners and screw heads. Compatible with EPDM rubber roofing, it offers excellent adhesion to aluminum, vinyl and galvanized metal. It improves the ability to continuously seal and remain flexible. The lap sealant is UV stabilized to prevent deterioration and discoloration and will not stain or discolor any material to which it is applied. Available in white, ivory and dove gray. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
This lap sealant should be available at a RV parts store or direct from the supplier - Dicor.
