Slide out - No awnings

I have notice that some FW have slide outs without awnings. I can see this as an advantage. Typically with heavy rain the water pools up and the awnings droop.. also if you get snow or frost that can be an issue when you are breaking camp, the next day. So my question is do you see a negative to not having awnings?

Personally I would want an awning to cover the slide when extended, otherwise you will have to use a ladder to get up high enough to sweep off all the debris that will accumulate on top of the slide every time before you break camp..

Have never had an RV without covers over the slides, and never will either.

I've had two class A's with awnings and now a fifth wheel without. I had multiple problems on both a Country Coach and a Monaco Exec. Our NuWa has good insulation in the slides and an EPDM layer on slide tops. I will never add awnings to this unit. If I needed them to stay cool in a unit with issues I would do it again. The CC had pooling issues, the Monaco we got caught in a high wind gust situation where they actually unrolled, then wadded up. I also had to restitch both coaches and simply don't need the headache. Your mileage may vary.

I believe some high end coaches i.e.: foretravel and prevost don't have awnings. I don't know I think no awnings might be the way to go!

Wind would be my concern.

I decided against them on my new 5th wheel. Don't think they are worth the money.

Foretravels have roll out awning/cover for the slide out, and awnings for all the windows as well as a patio awning... they are standard equipment.. (Zip Dee)

I just get on the roof and use a small electric leaf blower prior to breaking camp in the summer. In the winter, it's usually just a few swipes with a broom to kick the snow and ice off. Awnings are nice, but I'm cheap. Maybe on the next one.

No, it's not the same engine that had all the issues in semis.

And how do you get debris out from under the awning when wind blows it in there?

I'm with no awning and a leaf blower.

I'd rather have the toppers than climb the ladder with a leaf blower or hoist one up with a rope every time I break camp. A fall can certainly ruin the trip and a lot more. Anyway, in my experience very little debris gets under the topper.

We fall into the group without slide tippers and we do not want them. Spouse had a mirror on a pole to look for debris on the slides. If we pick the right site, we usually do not have to worry about debris. We have a rooftop satellite and we would never stow it without looking on the roof for debris and if we need to, we will use a battery powered leaf blower to clear debris. We have what is/was considered a fairly high end 5th wheel and they did not even offer slide toppers as an option.

Same here. Had a full slide on previous unit (approximately 14 feet long) and never had debris get under the topper in 12 years of use.

If it did, just blow it out with a leaf blower when you can. Worse case scenario, it would be on top of the slide when you retract it inside.

I like the toppers equally as much for UV protection for the rubber seals as for protection against a bunch of debris on top.
