What type of truck and what type of hitch? Such as short bed/long bed truck and do you pull a travel trailer or 5er? If a 5er and long bed any tool box will work including some with an auxiliary diesel fuel tank in them. On a short bed truck and a slider hitch the tool box could be a tight fit but doable.

I choose not to carry a tool box since I have no need for extra tools in my truck. I do carry a tool kit in the 5er basement and have a flat tool box that is carried in the cab under the rear seats.

If you are asking about the umbilical electric cord from the 5er to the truck. This will depend on where the plug in connections are on your truck. Some have two, one in the bed and the other is mounted at the rear panel under the bed. My truck only has one and this is mounted on the outside under the bed. I just drape the electrical cord over the tailgate and plug into the connection joint. I have done this with all of my 5er's and I have never had an issue with the cord.

tool box behind hitch

Here's a home made one.

Built out of 2 X 6 and plywood mounted on frame bolted to hitch rails.

Box rolls in and out on heavy duty drawer guides.

Originally box was 2' wider. Shortened it up to facilitate carrying twin
Honda 2000's.

Picked up one last summer from Dually Depot in Goshen, Ind.
https://www.theduallydepot.com/truck-accessories
The box I bought was $325 installed, I found the same box on line for $395 but had to be truck shipped for another $125 making it over $500.
But Dually Depot installed the new one in about 15 minutes. I also bought an extension for my 7 way plug, no issues of it getting caught and being damaged. I leave the extra length coiled and tye wrapped out of the way on the side of the box.
Go up there to Goshen be a nice trip and then you can take wife shopping in Shipshewana in the Amish stores. If you do stay at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds, 50amp FHU for under $35/night. You will be about 4 miles from Dually Depot on Kercher Road

I put a Du-Ha under the rear seat inside the cab. Finally realized I didn't need to have enough tools to overhaul the tranny. I carry a sockets and wrenches in the camper inside the front storage compartment using magnetic holders that stick to the wall. When we have the Jeep in tow, it has all the recovery/get back to pavement tools I need but don't really see a need for those with the trailer. For 99% of our travels all I really need is a cell phone and credit card.

A member on Turbo Diesel Register.com (TDR.COM) has a tool box in front of 5th wheel hitch similar to this style. Also one in back of the hitch but this is a fuel/tool box behind the hitch near the cab. This will only work with a non-sliding hitch from the dimensions of the box.
See attached link.

We always used job boxes in our work trucks with goosenecks but they werent bolted down. We still have to be able to hook up a gooseneck. Id imagine that a job box could be permanently mounted so long as its shorter than the hitch head. With the goosenecks we just used a cable to attach somewhere in the bed.

I have an 8' bed
In the front is a Enclosed 4K generator

Then 5th wheel hitch

Then at the rear is a Highway Products 5th Wheel Partner Tool Box
Low profile so it doesn't interfere with 5vr king pin

Looks like this (not my truck)

High quality/rugged---durable....been in truck since 2007
