Towing a Jayco Pinnacle 36REQS

Good Evening,

I have a friend who is looking at a 2013 Jayco 36REQS. It's very clean and has full body paint. He is mostly looking to put it on his ranch as a guest house but will also take it on the road once he retires. He is planning to pull it with a 2015 Chevrolet 2500HD with the Duramax diesel. The RV has a dry weight of 11,700, gross weight around 15,900 and hitch weight of 2670. The truck shows it can tow 17,900 and has a 3500 payload. After subtracting hitch weight he would have around 800 Lbs. for passengers and cargo. It seems to work on paper but wanted to get some feedback from you guys with real world towing experience and also some feedback on this 5th wheel model. It's his first 5th wheel.

His payload number seems very high for a 2500 with diesel. Assuming it is accurate, 800 pounds for hitch, passengers, and fuel will be close.

I checked a couple sites and that payload was listed.

Payloads are NOT found on websites. Every vehicle is different as every option on a truck lowers the payload. Look at the yellow sticker inside the driver's door. Dealers can not predict payloads until the vehicle is built.

"Yellow sticker" is called the Tire Loading Information" and is based on that specific truck. Published dealer/manufacturer numbers and basically meaningless in real life. My guess you will be shocked at how much less the actual cargo capacity really is.

According to S.A.E. J2807 towing requirements the payload is not considered. What is considered is the GAWR of front and rear axle and the GCWR of trucks when tested.

As an example for a 2017 Crew Cab Ram Long Bed with the 6.7L Cummins and the 6 speed auto 4X4 3:42 axles. The maximum front axle weight is 5,750 LBS, the maximum rear axle weight is 6,000 LBS the GCWR is 25,300 LBS and the maximum trailer weight is 16,750 LBS.

So, the Ram and your friends Chevy can tow this that trailer, per S.A.E. towing requirements.

The only people who require payload are the weight police on RV forums. This is one of the reason for S.A.E. in providing a standard for towing a trailer. Is to allow potential buyers of pickup trucks to make intelligent decision when purchasing base on testing requirements and not opinions!

So you are saying the manufacturer provided payload ratings are invalid then?

No, I am not saying payload is not important at all. Payload is important when you are carrying bulk items such as: sand, gravel, dirt, rock and bulk items like furniture.

As an example you can very easy over load a pick up truck when you are carrying sand, a cubic yard could weigh between 2,600lbs to 3,000lbs depending on moister content of the sand. A cubic yard will easily fit in the bed of a long bed truck.

So you are saying the 3500 lb pin weight is not payload?

This is what Ford says about the trucks they build. In 2015 between the user manual and the towing guides it says 7 times not to exceed the GVWR/Payload. This is not putting stuff in the back of the truck this is 5th wheel weight. But I suppose some people know more than the people that design and build the trucks.

“5th-Wheel Towing Notes:
This information also applies to models with pickup box delete option (66D). Trailer kingpin load weight should be 15% of total loaded trailer weight. Make sure that the vehicle payload (reduced by option weight) will accommodate trailer kingpin load weight and the weight of passengers and cargo added to the towing vehicle. The addition of trailer kingpin load weight, and the weight of passengers and cargo, must not cause vehicle weights to exceed the rear GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) or GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). These ratings can be found on the vehicle’s Safety Compliance Certification LabeL”

According to Ford, it's payload. I guess Ford it the ultimate in Weight Police. GMC went one step further and make a list of "severe consequences" for exceeding the GVWR of their trucks and posted on their website.

He will be way over the payload, GVWR and GAWR of that truck with the 5th you listed. As mentioned check the sticker on the door of the truck, not online and you'll be surprised. I really truly don't understand why the 3/4 ton truck segment exists. It's essentially useless if you want to haul anything. Your looking at 2500lbs of payload max.

That said - plenty of people tow far beyond that a 3/4 is rated for with simple modifications like airbags or helper springs. Nobody will ever stop him/bother him on the road, and the campgrounds are full of 3/4 tons towing heavy 5th wheels way over their ratings.

I wouldn't do it, but many do. *Shrug*

A 2500 Ram is a 3500 with an artificial 10,000lb gvw rating for registration purposes.
