On my aluminum wheels, after having a cracked valve stem, I also bought rubber stabilizers that fit in the hole in the wheel to keep the long stems from flexing while driving.

After getting fed up with leaks from option 2 on multiple RVs, I removed the extensions and now use option 1. Much better...
