Okay, thanks everyone. I share the same thoughts. I have had 4x4s so many years that I thought I would/should check the pulse so to speak before getting a bigger truck. Thanks again for the confirming replies.

At the very least, get a limited slip diff.

It's really helpful to be able to put power to the front wheels sometimes though...I only really needed 4WD about three times with my last RWD truck but those three times I REALLY needed it.

No, you don't need it. if you get stuck in a campground there is always some 4X4 guy there that well want to show you why you should have bought a 4X4 and pull you out and get you on your way. Myself I wouldn't leave home without on our truck even our Ford Fusion is an AWD. My wife wouldn't be without her AWD.

First things first. Find the trailer so you know the weights your going to be dealing with. Then you can find your truck with confidence. About the 4x4 vs 4x2. Even if you only use it once a year, the savings of that tow bill over the life of the truck will pay for the cost vs a 4x2. Who knows, you may even get a beer or two for pulling out a poor 4x2 that got stuck.

My question concerns whether to get a 4x4 again (that’s all we’ve had for the last several years) or a 4x2. I have never really needed to use 4x4 on my F150 when towing. So, my question is: do I need 4x4? What are you using?

4x4!! Honestly, I've never had to use the 4wd towing my 5th wheel but recently I drove down a dirt road here in the desert, not a rugged drive at all, there were cars going down the road. A ways into it I pulled off the road onto the side to take a picture. When I tried to get going again, the rear wheels just spun in the loose sand. I'd have been screwed if not for the 4x4. Spend the extra money, the resale will be better the peace of mind alone is worth it. Years ago I was hauling out my boat (I had a two wheel drive truck then). The ramp was slick, the truck just sat there and spun the tires. Had to have help from a Good Samaritan to get out of the situation. I'll wager at some point you'll say, "Man, I'm glad I have a4x4!"
