Well, I agree that another 3 inches is not going to matter much. What's an inch on a whale.
Vandalism? I'm not that well travelled, but I would not give it a thought. Just cant picture a lazy thief wondering by and thinking that would be something to try and pull off my rv.

1. it makes the RV wider, so there is greater chance of something ripping the cam and the light off of the sidewall

2. it makes the camera easily accessible to bad guys, theft or vandalism
Your side marker lights and cameras are made together as one unit. Like at the Furrion side lights/cameras it is one unit. You remove the old lights and install these. These are close to the same style on some Class A units, same concept.

thanks guys yes I consider myself suitably calibrated. learning has occurred! this popped into my head though -- if one goes to the trouble of mounting cameras on the side, why not power them such that you can use them as a security/surveillance camera while camped (running lights off)?

that would require some wiring, but this seems to be a worthwhile endeavor

I have been using the Haloview now for 2 seasons and it has been flawless. Excellent and quick technical support to the couple questions I have posed. The picture is very clear and also offers a night view. This unit is sold on Amazon.

What is the video lag time like on the freeway?

If you are asking me about the Haloview it is nearly instantaneous. Perhaps a millisecond. I am sure you could get a more technical answer from their tech support. Even when driving at road speed you can easily see the road patches, small stones, and stains in the road streaming by. The screen size is also quite large which helps. I only have the rear facing camera but it easily accommodates additional cameras if desired.

excellent. I've been trying to rationalize conflicting reports of lag vs no lag. I even reached out to Jerry Neal (iLoveRVLife) and he also confirmed that the video lag is not enough to worry about. the key here I suspect is to ensure good RF signal. Jerry's install of the "range dominator" is really informative, and illustrates that the only real solution to the majority of issues with these kinds of systems, for long rigs anyway, is to extend/relocate the rear camera antenna closer to the TV cab. this eliminates a host of challenges for the RF to travel from the rear of the coach, bounce off of the pavement whizzing by at various speeds (reflections behave differently as speed increases) and finally penetrate the TV to be picked up by the antenna on the dash.

Also -- I have mentioned a competing product by the name of "fookoo" which also seems to "get it" as regards customer support. my only concern with the fookoo system is the 170 degree angle of the rear-facing cam. that is fisheye territory -- if you do the trig you will see that at only 10 feet out, the side-to-side field of view is a whopping 225-ish feet! but the Haloview's 130 degree field of view is much more reasonable.
