Every tv/trailer combo will have its own “sweet spot” of tongue weight. The longer the wheelbase, the less tongue weight is needed. And of course you have to balance tongue weight with available payload. With our short 131” wheelbase and small payload, we need a WDH with built-in sway control to comfortably tow our 5,000# GVWR trailer. The WDH moves enough weight to the tv front axle to keep us under rear GAWR. Dual trailer axles helps a lot. We travel with 1/2 tank fresh water, heavy loaded pass through, and light weight in truck bed to give us the best towing comfort. We go with about 575-600# on the tongue. That’s by coincidence 12%. If we’re carrying our bikes over the tonneau, we move some weight from the tv bed to the inside of the trailer to compensate. If we had a 3/4 ton truck, none of this would be necessary, but we don’t want a big truck.
