You do not seem to consider who actually chooses to fill these surveys out. That is a variable rarely discussed. It is proven that if one is unhappy with a product, they will be more likely to respond to the survey when compared to those that are happy with the product.

Motor trend truck of the year ! Chevy also makes a good truck. Consumer reports is crap when it comes to trucks.

Does Motor Trend ever say anything bad about any of their reviews? I buy Motor Trend for the entertaining writing. Car & Driver also had some entertaining writers.
A Car & Driver writer once wrote that a redesigned car was carved out of a solid piece of metal and was 'more better' than the previous model.
Road & Track would have good road trips.
But CR was the best to see which vehicles were having problems.

and that variable is nullified by a large enough sample size. CR knows just a wee bit about this business of creating ratings based on consumer surveys. They've been at it for decades now. They are the first to recognize when there aren't enough responses for an accurate rating.

The problem with surveys is they are biased by nature. People that complain will say the most, and people very rarely rate things as exceptional because everything can be improved. The key to surveys is to find out the customers habits, likes and dislikes. The score is not really important. Been in banking for 25 years the only time I hear from a customer is when they are pissed we charged them a fee for bouncing a check because they forgot how to do 2nd grade math and that’s always my fault somehow.
Speaking of CR reports it was several years ago but they had to admit they favored Toyota’s and actually wouldn’t wait for the survey responses before they posted their results. They did this because they had a track record of certain results. This is misleading and you have to assume they do this with all kinds of products. And the data may be cooked either good or bad towards a product with a reputation. They may have changed their procedures but it’s just a demonstration of bias. It’s not only them if you are a fan boy of a certain product when you complete a survey you will provide answers that are biased to your pre determined opinions.

Well said. And 100% agree. If someone wants to put their faith in consumer reports, more power to them. It is right down their with the National Enquirer as far as we are concerned.
