2015 Ford F350 Diesel Platinum
A buddy just bought one with 40K miles and I'm pretty sure he did zero research. Were all the diesel problems gone by that year? Any other things to know about that year?

I have over 100K on my 2015 F350 diesel with only 2 minor issues early on that were covered under warranty.
The only big issue that I know of is that the water-in-fuel (WIF) sensor is apparently not very good. I've heard reports that damage to the fuel system has probably already happened by the time that the WIF light goes on.

There are continual changes always going on in diesel engines. My thought is 2015 was Generation 2 of the 6.7 Ford Powerstroke - it is better than Generation 1. There was a long list of improvements from improved turbo and turbo cooling to recalibration of the EGR. More HP and Torque also.
The Platinum trim is sweet. That should be a comfortable truck.
Ford made more changes in 2017 and again in 2020.

Don't know about the 2015, but I did a ton of research and bought a very well maintained, documented, and adult kept 1st gen 2011 Lariat. Most of the nightmare stories with the 2011-12 were from people that were largely responsible for their issues with lack of attention, chipping stupid, and beating the crap out of them. Best vehicle purchase of my life. Fully deleted and very mild SCT tow tuned at 80k and have no interest in selling/trading although I cannot believe the interest in the vehicle if I was. I understand the product, do a lot of my own maintenance, and keep it in perfect shape. 110k on the odometer, never any lights or problems. I tow med-heavy for one week a month from March through November around the SE in the heat and up and down the hills. Great mileage and the rest of the year it's my daily driver. Get a good one and treat it well, don't believe all the negative crap about the 1st gen, and enjoy!

I had a 1st Gen 2012 for 6.5 years with zero problems. Had oil changed every 5,000 miles and water separator drained. I bought the truck new.
I think Ford did a good job on the Gen 1 engine and only improved it since.
What was more amazing was my King Ranch dually - all bells and whistles still worked after 6.5 years.
I traded for another Ford. I would like to try a GM or Ram but I liked the Ford trucks I have owned. That is why I view Ram and GM as more risk.

6.5 years, I am impressed...for a Ford.
My 1994 Suburban started getting a few gadgets going bad 5 years ago. I am restoring the rear A/C as soon as I have a time slot on my main lift.
My 2011 has absolutely everything working top notch, zero warning lamps are on and no deleted nothing.
Ford sales are strong as they concentrated all their production, marketing and sales on the F-trucks. Also, they offer some of the deepest discounts and tons of fleet vehicles vs the other brands.

Kdauto-isnt your 2011 a gas truck? Shouldnt be any def or dpf to hurt it.
Op: emissions systems on all these trucks are a pain. I would look into putting that stuff in the shed and hanging onto it for resale at a later date. The 2014 i used to run had a doser for the def that would always dose. That truck always smelled like it was regenning and had a white haze all the time. Otherwise i had no problems out of that truck. I would advise carrying a small sledge behind the seat, ive noticed the fords are especially bad about wheels getting stuck to the hubs after you take the lugnuts off.

Yes, mine is a 6.0 gasser. Some people still remove cats on them and some use tuners. I was almost tempted to install a supercharger a few years ago, now i'll just wait for the next truck upgrade.
I'll remind the O.P. that modifying or deleting emissions on a diesel is illegal whether or not your state/province has emissions tests or not. Beware of possible hefty fines!

No worries.... I honestly don't think my buddy could change his own oil. There's slightly less than zero chance he'd remove emissions Also, we're firmly in a DEQ/testing area.
Thanks everyone... great info and very encouraging. I guess I hadn't realized how much time has passed and was still thinking of problems with earlier diesels.

Just for grins you ought to go test drive a new HD diesel truck. It will be an eye opener. They really are fantastic vehicles.

There still are problems with dpf and egr. I had to have a dpf swapped out on a newer cummins m series a few months ago. Theyre not as bad as they were, but its still a problem. People wouldnt be deleting them if they werent an eventual problem.

The 6.7L was first introduced in 2011, not 2012. I have a 2012 and the only issue has been with the DEF tank and level sensors. Truck has 93,000 miles now and doing good.
The EGR coolers on the newer diesels are prone to sooting if the truck is driven to easily. They were meant to work, so avoid excessive city idling and heavy city driving. A couple of Ford shops as well as an independent diesel shop told me to drive the truck like you just stole it.

I've got a 2015 Platinum Edition with 97,000 miles on it. Zero issues with it. Tows our 16,000lb Cedar Creek like a dream and is also my daily driver. The trim on the Platinum edition is awesome.
